Im doing a test instal and setup of a linux os in virtual pc for possible use as a server.

My question is, after I install it on virtual pc, set it up and figure out if I want to use it can I just transfer the contents of the virtual hdd to a real hdd and turn on the computer and run the os I setup in virtual pc?

Which programs would I need to do this if its possible.

Thanks guys.

Winimage 8, it can extract files from vhds. Remember to also write the linux boot sector.

Is there an equivalent of Sysprep for Linux then, as surely all the hardware info in the installation would be wrong when you transferred it to the server otherwise?

@Vista:
No, none that I know of. There are Live Linux distros like Knoppix that do an automatic hardware detection on every boot, but normally this is not the case. You have to do the hardware assimilation again, at least for the important devices like ethernet cards.

@DJ:
As for extracting the data, you have to be sure that the program you use, WinImage or whatever, can deal with the filesystem and specialities like file permissons etc. correctly. Otherwise, the system won't boot or it won't even work. I don't know if WinImage can do this.
As it was already mentioned, don't forget to reinstall the boot loader.
I have to admit I am not sure if this will work, especially due to the fact that VPC doesn't offer a way to mount it's HD images and extract the data. If you would manage to mount the VHD in another Linux system, then you could copy the data over...
