What exactly is happening ie when does the error appear (while booting, before/after logon etc), what exactly does it say, what type is it (Bsod, dialog box etc?). It doesn't sound like it would be anything to do with it being a VLK as there's no way that alone would stop you logging on.

The only licensing-related error that can stop you logging on is the one that goes something like "there was a problem checking the licence for this computer" or something like that, but that usually only happens when you mess around with things like converting one version of Windows to another (Home to Pro etc), or doing an incomplete replacement of the files that you need to change to make it accept a key from a different version of Windows. There's also a Bsod that you can get if you're using a cracked version of Windows and you install the WGA Notifications update, but if you're using VLK then you won't have an activation crack applied.

Will it start up in Safe Mode?

If you tell us some more detail about the error then we may be able to help you out :)

Safe Mode is impossible with a USB keyboard...
And reinstall is not an option as it contains US govt. records.
My activation crack was 3 days old...
it is dialog and then reboot.

Friend bringing PS2 keyboard, will delete the cryptography provider entries in the registry, other forums say that is the way to go.

i'd say that is the reason, cause didn't ms recently release new wga updates?

plus why would you keep government records on a pirate xp? Anyway you can reinstall without formating

If you recently used windows update then you will have made the computer lock you out. Its M$'s new way of saying buy a proper OS or we will stop you using any OS. Its happened to a mate of mine and he ended up formatting and not using windows updates.

Yeh, I wouldn't personally have US government records on a pirated XP install...

I'd do a side-by-side install, if you've got the HDD space. Run the installer, choose your system partition, *leave the filesystem intact, do NOT format*, and change the name of the WINDOWS folder to something like winxp. Once you're in your new install, you should be able to get access to all your previous documents by taking ownership of the folders.

But if it's VLK why do you have an activation crack?

Not installing the wga update apparently has its bad points too according
to this sight here.
Seems there's more goes on than meets the eye if chosen not to install.

Your government agency should back up the records over the network through WinPE and either have them downgrade to 2000 or buy xp. Here in CT, I see the government computers still using 2000 and their budget is limited at the state level.

The best way is to get a PE Live CD made up and copy the records to a External HDD, Flash Drive etc

Yeah umm time to pull out. Why you've got a cracked version of windows with government records on it I dont know, but it is irrelevant. Get yourself a copy of Knoppix Live Linux CD Distro, boot with that and recover the files to a secure partition, secondary hard-drive, flash key or DVD. Then its time to head to the shops and buy a legal version. Lesson Learnt.
