The 'Where did the wallpaper come from' Thread

Post by David Nucrdale »

Ok, I often think about this, so lets just start. Everybody, if you know where a Windows-Default wallpaper was shot, post it!

XP Bliss (Standardwallpaper on XP):

Windows Vista Beta Wallpaper:

Windows 7 Beta Wallpaper:

Any more?

That's a pretty cool topic.
I don't have a clue which location the Longhorn Build 3683 Wallpaper show, such cornfields can be in lots of places around the world.

Wikipedia has some good information about XP's Bliss.bmp. Interesting to see that the picture was originally taken in 1996, and then what the same location looked liked in 2006.

I don't know why I always thought bliss was fake.......

I've always wondered about the lighthouse from OS/2 2.0 .... but that's another animal.

Actually Windows 7 wallpapers from localized themes (at least russian) has the name of place in their "title" tag (could be seen in Details tab in properties of file). The same with some other wallpapers (at least Vista and ME).

I wouldnt doubt that its been heavily photoshopped to bring out the green grass and the blue sky, but its real. Heres how it looks on Google streetview, although its not quite as nice looking:

The actual Bliss picture was probably taken further down into the valley so that less of the mountains and house were seen then when taken from the street.

The OS/2 lighthouse appears to be real. In the beta, it had a US flag flying on the pole, but this was later removed. Both of these pictures are in my Bitmap collection. (There's a thread on the 'Requests' for it, with the download link).

It's the cape neddick lighthouse in Maine.

I've seen a picture of the OS/2 lighthouse compared with the Windows 7 one. The Windows 7 one is on the second (unreleased) disk of the bitmap project.

The Win7 one is in the USA theme, #2, is Pemaquid Lighthouse and Cliffs; Maine, USA (by its exif).
