This is a tutorial on how to dual-boot Windows XP and 7 with 7 already installed.
WHAT YOU NEED:
A disk with 2 partitions or 2 seperate disks, the one you're going to install XP on has to be at least 3GB, but I use an 80GB disk
An official Windows XP CD or an ISO of the version you're going to install and a blank CD
Internet Access
--------------------------------------------------------
SKIP THESE STEPS IF YOU HAVE AN OFFICIAL CD
PowerISO or the Cyberlink ISO software
Load in the ISO
Put the CD in your drive and burn it
--------------------------------------
Boot into the installer and install Windows XP like normal
Download and install .NET framework 2.0
Download and install EasyBCD
Run EasyBCD
Go to Deployment
Write the Vista MBR
Boot into your Windows 7 partition
Open EasyBCD
Go to the Add New Entry tab
Click the drop-down menu and select NT/2k/XP/2k3
Go to your XP drive
Click Add New Entry
Restart your computer and you should see the boot menu.

Install Windows XP on a partition/disk, install Windows 7 on the other, done.

Windows XP setup can be booted with a USB or SD card.

An alternative would be to install XP normally, boot into XP and set the Windows 7 partition as active, and finally run rebuildbcd on Windows 7 to add XP as a boot option.

As a side note, you can use BootICE instead of EasyBCD. Note that BootICE doesn't need any dependencies, but its configuration method is different.

So does this work with USB install?

Yes, it should work with a USB or an SD card, like I mentioned in my first post. Just format it to the correct filesystem (I believe FAT32) and make it bootable with CMD or a USB tool like Rufus. Another thing you could possibly do is use an external CD reader and follow the author's guide.

Sure, pretty much anything like that may work on a USB flash drive, or even an SD card. Remember, not everything has to be installed using an optical disc :) Also note that no matter what type of storage device you use, you should always format it to FAT32, or else it may fail to enter the setup. That happened to me once, when I tried to install an OS from a DVD I burnt myself without formatting it to FAT32.

You can’t necessarily “Format” a CD-R or DVD-R. I used a normal CD with CDFS and it worked fine
