In this tutorial I'll show you how to limit speed in virtualbox. (Please note that it is only packets being sent that is throttled, might have changed though in newer versions haven't tested it out)
It works by delaying the packets, however no extra software is needed.
Open a terminal window and here are steps for different operating systems.
Windows - copy this command in quotes (don't copy the quotes) "cd C:/Program Files/Oracle/VirtualBox/" or if that folder doesn't exist do "cd "C:/Program Files (x86)/Oracle/VirtualBox/"" then press enter. Then follow the steps for part 2 at bottom.
Mac OS X & Linux - No steps needed! Works right out of the box

All Operating Systems Part 2 - Do the following below

VBoxManage bandwidthctl "VM name" add Limit --type network --limit 20m
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --nicbandwidthgroup1 Limit
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --nicbandwidthgroup2 Limit
in this example it is changing the VM "VM name" to 20mbps. If I wanted 56k dialup I'd do the same but replace 20m with 56k.
Here is some clarification on the letters.
b = bit k = kilobit m = megabit g = gigabit
B = byte K = kilobyte M = megabyte G = gigabyte
Before the letter use a number. Hope this works, I tested it out connecting to my websites FTP server and it worked great! :D

I'm pretty sure internet speed isn't affected by which VM software you use.
