Hello,
If your PC is running slow, use the following method!

1. Goto my computer
2. Right click on your HDD (Or partition that the OS is on)
3. Select Properties
4. Click "Disk Cleanup"
5. When it has finished calculating (takes a few mins), make sure all of the boxes are checked then click OK and press YES (Something along those lines)
6. When that has completed, click on the tab "Tools". Click on Check Now and make sure both boxes are ticked. When you press start, it will say it needs to be check on boot blah blah blah. Press Yes to that.
7. Now click on defragment now and press DEFRAGMENT (not analyze).
8. Reboot you PC and notice a difference!

OPTIONAL: Free up disk space by compressing the HDD. Goto my computer, right click the HDD, Properties then tick compress drive then OK then apply to all folders and subfolders blah then press ok. after a few mins it will say unable to compress files. Just press IGNORE ALL. It will take an hour or two but is well worth it!

Guide Made by Jonty.

I don't think compressing the drive will increase performance, although it will of course free up some space if you really need it - compression will, if anything, it will reduce performance.

If the decompressing overhead (which is relatively small, as the NTFS compression is rather poor) is smaller than the physical size decrease, then performance will increase.

1. That was a big unnecessary bump.
2. This is not the best way to speed up your computer, it's just a common way.

I find that using Disk Cleanup and CCleaner really help keep my computer running smooth, along with regular disk defragments. Works great for me!

My problem is I wait to long to defragment.
So the disk (or partition) will fill up.
Then defragmenter won't have any room to work.
Some will quit, others take forever to finish.

After the drive fills up I just get a new drive.
Then when you copy the original drive to a new one (using Linux USB flash drive), the files get defragmented. And it's faster too.

1st problem: you shouldn't bump so old threads just to get crappy 12 post access on FTP...

2nd problem: you defragment too little, if you did it more often (once per month) you would'nt have such issues
