Windows Home Server - Announcing Power Pack 2
March 2009

http://blogs.technet.com/homeserver/arc ... ack-2.aspx

I dont think I will test this after the huge let-down on testing WHS betas (filing bugs & suggestions) for 9 months & no complimentary copy offered for my effort, went out & bought a copy instead & am still using it.
I installed PP1 but passed on PP2.

Have you ever read the user agreement for beta testing? MS doesn't have to provide you a fully license copy upon completion of the best program. If they do, it's a reward.
Some have a "childish" thinking that if they do hard work in the beta testing, they will receive a gift at the end.

I remember on another forum, some guy was complaining how he reported 76 bugs for testing on vista beta2/rc1 from the customer preview program and got nothing, no free copy and no word of appreciation. While Connect testers filed one lousy bug and got vista ultimate free.

No words have been said about Windows 7, but I speculate that they will not be offering any free copy that time. They did not send out beta discs, no interim builds and the focus of development wasn't dependent on the beta program. They get more feedback from selected partners and the leak builds. The whole program exist just for customer satisfaction on development and to prove to customers there is a link between them and users.

You are absolutely correct.

I never expect to receive a gift from my work beta testing in the TechBeta.
But in all those I've been in MS did come through w/ one, except WHS & PP1, probably will be the same for Win7 too.

It is a bit of a disappointment though & makes one consider why they feel like they waste their time w/ small betas like WHS, thats how I feel since WHS requires a dedicated PC to correctly test + another rig for the Connector SW. PP# requires the same & one might as well face it w/ a PP beta one is basically wasting their time & resources being in that TechBeta.

I know the private NG's are a learning experience & semi fun too, but is it really worth it?

IMO its the same for the O2010 TechBeta too now that I can see what is happening there & who is running it.

Is there a standalone installer for Power Pack 2? or do I have to obtain Power Pack 2 via Automatic Updates and then update to Power Pack 3?

The old windows beta testing site (beta place) was a lot more welcoming for testers. Even though I don't remember how did the site looked like, but it was a lot more user oriented. MS wants beta testers back them. They accept their feedbacks.
Today, MS had changed. They don't want the typical user's feedback anymore. They change their business' goals and target large business instead. The while vista enterprise edition and windows 7 professional is created as the result of this. They blame that polishing a build for testers is a waste of time and resources of course ($$$). In fact, quite a number of whistler beta builds were "main" (the old name for "winmain") branch builds. In vista, all tester's builds were winmain_idx, recompile of winmain builds. Vista was such a "bad" product that they have to recompile and polish builds before they were released. Windows 7, they decided to give out major milestones instead. The public gets the same builds, which downgrades the testers to the same level as the public.
They might as well not have a beta program for Windows 8. Lame, thats all I got to say 8-)

As a participant in the Tech Beta for 7 I fully agree with the above statement.

Also, I was invited to participate in the PP3 beta so if someone wants me to upload it to the FTP let me know...

Microsoft base Windows Home Server on Windows Server 2003 x86 is not too smart. I don't understand why they would base it on a dying architecture.

If microsoft were to base Windows Home Server on server 2008 it would of rtm'd in early 2008 as opposed to late 2007.

I only have the "Public Beta" which was acutally the RC4 of the Power Pack 1... I don't think any betas of the PP2 are leaked.

Here are the files: http://thecake.doesntexist.org/private/WHSPP1BTA/
