Microsoft have announced that their veteran web-based messenger client will become unavailable from this Tuesday, June 30. The service has offered access to their popular instant messaging network through a web browser for the past five years.

The new "Web Messenger" will be the actual Windows Live Messenger integrated in Windows Live Mail.

Personally, I don't care as I don't use Windows Live anymore. I completely switched to Google apps. (Not the actual Google Apps.com but the Apps that Google offers, Docs, Calendar, Mail, etc.!)

Your obviously not an American - I don't know a single person who used Yahoo Messenger, and I only have one or two people on my MSN screen name. In contrast, I have 225 unique buddies in AOL Instant Messenger.

I'm in Florida, US. With very few exceptions, everyone I know uses AOL IM. I've had an account since, I think, 2000. It might have even been earlier than that. Before that I used ICQ. I used to have my buddy list maxed out to where I couldn't add any more friends.

There seems to be some confusion about this because whoever posted the news wrote it correctly in the title but misunderstood and wrote something different in their post. Microsoft is phasing out MSN Web Messenger, not Windows Live Messenger. They both operate on the same network so it doesn't matter, they're just getting rid of old software.

Or Pidgin...

http://www.pidgin.im/

It's better than everything else, unless you like Digsby.

Unless you use OS X, then I hear Adium is the thing to use.

http://adium.im/

But really everything else is just crap in comparison.

My family has been AOL members since 1996 (launch of AOL 3.0)
I have been an Yahoo! member since 2003
I have been a MSN member since 2006

And honestly, 90% of my IM buddies are on MSN. 40 of them as contrast to 13 (aim) and 5 (yahoo)

Here in Greece the only IM client is MSN Messenger. If you ask someone "Do you have a yahoo?", he/she will reply "Do you mean e-mail?"

Same here in the UK, very few people use anything other than the MSN Network, and WLM really is the best client, specially with WLM9's new features.

Ahem, minority? Almost everyone is using MSN in my school here except those without computer...

Anyway, they said to close the online messenger not the whole messenger system so I think it should be no problem at all.
