Bill Gates 'guaranteed' a major version of Windows 2-4 years after Vista ships while talking to Wincustomize at the 2006 CES in Los Angeles. This is in contrast to what many analysts have said, particulary Gartner, claiming that Windows Vista will be last last of the major Windows product range.
The media picked up on Gartner's comments last year, creating quite a hyped-up frenzy. Lol, Analysts and thier guessing games.
So is Codename Fiji going to be more important than previously thought, or was the 2-4 year guideline more wishful thinking, possibly reffering to Windows Codename Vienna?
well these 'analysts' are stupied. how much money does windows make for microsoft? of course they are going to make another
I don't think the last version of Windows will be the last version of MS' OSes, but there has been some speculation of an entirely new operating system which is not Windows, codenamed "Singularity", IIRC. I guess this is what the analyst was/is referring to.
Windows Vienna is scheduled for 2012 - only five years away, do you think that could be what he was talking about the next "major" release? (where Fiji is supposed to be an update-style upgrade to Vista iirc)
Fiji's like a minor OS, kindof parrallel to Windows Server 2003 R2, with a few added features. The current Microsoft naming scheme is based on "Vista's" around the world. Vienna has some beutiful architecture, hence why it was chosen. Fiji is all clear and beutiful, that's why it was chosen, Microneisia doesn't sound beutifull... reminds me of chinese sweat factories (Not sure why)
Fuji will be an minor release, maybe version NT 6.2 since vista is 6.0 and lh server should be 6.1 (just a guess)
Vienna would problary be NT 7.0, a major release since microsoft usually jumps a version in 5 years and the "longhorn reset" should never happen again
Fuji will be an minor release, maybe version NT 6.2 since vista is 6.0 and lh server should be 6.1 (just a guess)
Vista might become 6.1 with SP1, as it's being said that SP1 will bring the updated kernel and other bits from LH Server to Vista.
Also, from what some are saying, Vienna might not even be NT at all, although that kinda seems unlikely to me as they've done so much work reworking the NT core for Vista that it surely wouldn't make sense not to build on that for the next version?
I'm not sure if Longhorn Server will be NT 6.1, the betas are all 6.0. Maybe it's like it was with Whistler Server: the first alphas/betas were NT 5.1, and when they started to use the new code base, it became NT 5.2.
