A new edition of Windows Server 2008, Windows Storage Server 2008, has recently been released and today became available on TechNet to download :) -

As you can see, it is available for x86 in the Basic SKU only, while for x64 a combined DVD containing Basic, Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise versions is available.

A very curious one. Copyright date and build in the shots seem to suggest it's based on the original Server 2008 SP1 release rather than on R2. x86 too.
Look forward to giving this one a try soon.

Of cause it is based on the original Server 2008 not R2, R2 haven't even been release yet.

That doesn't really stop them from basing it on the newer version... it's already at RC status. Hyper-V Server as point in fact was based on 2008 "Core", yet the newer Hyper-V Server R2 which was just released is based on 2008 R2 I believe.

This is a released product so has to be based on the 2008 non-R2 core, R2 is not of release quality yet so could not be used in an already-released product. Though I suppose it might have made sense to hold off for a bit longer with this release and release it long with the other R2 editions.

Sort of what I meant. I was just surprised with everything coming up moving to being 7/R2 based to see it was based on the older version that's all. Although if it means an x86 version being available, great.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are based on an beta build of Windows Server 2003 SP1, to be fair - so that's not completely true. ;-)

That's a bit different since they base it on a beta of a service pack release (SP1). It's base is still an RTM build. With R2 the base is still not RTM, and Microsoft never makes an RTM release based on a beta (no cheap shots please :) ).

They were going to do like that with Longhorn at first. The builds before restart (before 5xxx series) were based on RC1 of 2003 (.NET Server back then) AFAIR.

True, but the Longhorn builds were far far away from RTM...
