A Microsoft spokeswoman said that there's no proof the Vista timestoper crack has been widely spread, inferring that the crack does work.

The crack requires setting the target computer's BIOS clock to 2099. The hack does work on 32-bit Windows Vista installations but not necessarily 64-bit versions. The process requires some other Windows changes and eventual clock reset from within Vista leading to a continual state of 30 days to activation.

It is reasonably widespread, a friend on MSN told me about it last night.

All you do is install with a date of 2099 (or whatever), then reset the clock to normal once it's done - the 30 day grace period ends 30 days after the installation date. I wouldn't really call it a "crack", as I tried this as soon as Vista leaked (and was very surprised to find that to worked, as it’s the kind of trick that usually only works on very old shareware) and I've still got 30 days, despite not modifying any files (more of a workaround than a crack). Thing is, the way that MS talk about it, it sounds as though every time a crack or workaround appears they are going to patch it, which makes it very difficult for the pirates indeed (even if you decline the patch, it will still be included in SP1).

they only mention this now? they probably said "modifying files" so the average user doesn't try. Like R2 (heh :P) said, normaly only old software this works and im sure they will patch it

The way it works is it installs a driver that blocks Vista from checking the activation counter so it gets stuck at 43200 minutes. And a new version was released that adds 64 bit too.

Just setting the clock to 2099 doesn't entirely work. It still says 30 days, but your minutes will start counting down after you have had Vista on for an hour. Open run and type "slmgr.vbs -dlv" and you will see it is lower than 43200 and is going down. I think it only counts down for the time you are in Vista, but it will eventually reach 0 unless you apply this crack.
