but its better to use a now-safe method than using one which has weaknesses, even if the probability of a
collision is low !

when just being used for a password, this is no problem at all, but when regularily hashing gigabytes of data, runtime performance of SHA-256 vs. MD5 might actually be a consideration

and of course every hash-algorithm has collisions...it's not that you are completely safe of them when using SHA-256
