The first and only release candidate of Windows 7 is expected to be released in April 2009 according to a news post on wzor.net which are citing Microsoft sources. The OEM of Windows 7 is aiming for an autumn release while the final retail release is expected to be available at the beginning of the Christmas season.

The latest known official builds of windows 7 are build 7015 and 7016 that have been created on 4.1.2009 and 12.1.2009. Build strings for those releases are 7015.fbl_multimedia_media.090104-1750 and 7016.0.090105-1500.

So soon? Beta period for Vista lasted for 1 year and 3 months. It seems impossible, that 7's one will last only 3 months. 7 is a minor upgrade, I know, but it's still strange.
BTW don't you know, if Microsoft is going to give 7 to those who report errors like in Vista tests?

Well, MS want to get this RTM'd by the end of the year, it's no surprise that RC might be here by April.

If Windows 7 is pushed this early, it'll be the quickest release of any OS, except Windows XP (which was only released about 18 months since Windows 2000)...

I still think they're completely stupid, releasing Windows 6.1 as "Windows 7." Unless, that is, they indend to renumber it to 7.0 when it's closer to complete?

I think they not going to change the buildnumber.
Also when the longhorn era began it also began with 6.0.

Considering xp was 5.1 and heavily built off 2000 Vista is 6.0 and has larger differences from xp and 7 is compatible on many levels with Vista I think its going to stay at 6.1.

of course remember minor build number doesn't mean minor release; this is major release 7 to Microsoft.

If there is an RC2 - I heard that they were planning just one Beta and RC - though I suspect that they'll fill in that time by releasing CTPs to Connect Testers like they did with Vista.

The only stupidity I see is of someone who doesn't understand what Software Compatibility means.

They ARE NOT going to be changing the version number to 7.0 at any time in the future for Windows 7, it's going to be staying at 6.1 to ensure the Compatibility of most Programs that run under Vista because most of the Software out there checks for one main thing, the "6" under the version number.

Silly people.

i really dont understand why such things are so hard to understand, also, which confuses me even more, why are people so intrested if its "6.1" or "7.0"? :?

Woohoo, looks like Microsoft got in a productionboost. I can understand that because they want to release it through the end of 2009 :o

I think MS would get away from Vista as soon as possible and do therefore this.

However, i'm still waiting (I think it would never be developed, but I really liked it) on the Longhorn of their concept.

Maybe they thought Windows 7 is a major update so they think it should be 7.0? some people actually have said Windows 7 will be a major update. there have been a lot of misconceptions out there about Windows 7...

Because 6.1 would basically be windows vista.1 7.0 would be... windows 7. A whole new operating system. According to a friend most of it is rewritten so i know its optimised.

I really doubt it was rewritten, it would break a lot of Applications including WizMail (Internal MS Mail)

Why April? Surely it will be later because the beta ends in August.

Why wait until August? that's the sort of time they seem to want it RTMing, shortly after August. MS want 7 out of the door, while it's still riding on a wave of hype.

"Windows 7," version 6.1; that's why.... 'Windows 7' is a misnomer.
