Scott Wylie, Microsoft's New Zealand Director of Development and Platform Strategy, wrote today on his blog about his experience installing a pre-beta build of Windows 7 on his home laptop.

It is interesting to note that the pre-beta build of Windows 7 installed on his home laptop seems to be build 7004, which if the term "pre-beta" is accurate would indicate that Windows 7 beta one will be some build number higher than 7004. On the blogosphere the general consensus has been that beta one would be build 7000.0.081212-1400 which the following screen shot from Scott's laptop could indicate is inaccurate.

According to Windows 7 News the build shown above is 7004.0.081203-1830 which would indicate that this build was created on December 3rd at 18:30, this build could be from the Release Candidate (RC) branch. We therefore could still see build 7000.0.081212-1400 as the beta which would have been built on December 12th at 14:00.

As I quoted James O'Neill (Microsoft) saying earlier today, “Those who know aren’t talking and those who talk don’t know” .

Earlier today the Windows 7 homepage included a link to download the Windows 7 beta although the link unfortunately didn't work and has since been removed. I still believe we'll have to wait until after Steve Ballmer's CES keynote before we'll be able to download the beta.

It really looks great! I hope that we will get the beta soon.

Look what happened at the theme since we get our first Windows 7 build. It is really improved to my opinion.

I think there must be some reason behind all that talking whether beta will be released on 7 of January or today. Perhaps, certain closed group of testers will get beta today, but all the rest on 7 of January. So, if we're lucky and some tester leaks it, we'll have happy Christmas with the beta of Windows 7 :)

I hope you are correct, can we upgrade from a previous build? I've seen the answer someone in a thread, but can't find it anymore :(

No unless MS states you could. This is the case in the post beta 2 builds. It is usually stated in the readme / release notes.
The sad part is that the original microsoft release notes usually don't come packaged with the leaked build. What's worst is that 90% of the testers (usually the more immature testers) don't read it and starts complaining / filing bugs on something stated in the release notes.

Yeah. I like reading the release notes for some reason.

zamadatix:

1)Don't quote big posts...
2)The person who leaked the image probably was testing whether Firefox/Chrome would work in the build...

Also, I wonder if human error was involved, because 7004 was complied earlier than 7000

that site seems to be just an ftp... (win7.org doesn't appear as anything and win7.com is one of the weirder sites in the world).

i'm doubting its real though. id love to be wrong :D

Just a guess but the file is probably:
7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_ultimate-gb1culxfre_en_dvd.iso

See the caparison:
6936.0.081023-1800_Client_en-us_ULTIMATE-GB1CULXFRE_EN_DVD.iso
7000.0.081212-1400_Client_en-us_ULTIMATE-GB1CULXFRE_EN_DVD.iso

@Day2Die: You are correct by reasoning.
@zamadatix: Any computer I use, will use win7 as the username to login, it only prompts for a password

ask orbit30 if he's got a username/password for that link, then download the ISO and upload to the BetaArchive FTP :P

We'd all love you for it.
