EDIT: Of course, immediately after I post this it starts working.

Apologies - our website is struggling to cope with the unprecedented
demand for the new release 3.0 of OpenOffice.org. The technical teams are
trying to come up with a solution.

Downloads are up!

I've been following this one for months. OpenOffice.org 3.0 is supposed to be officially released today... I'm guessing it has been because they're servers have been knocked offline, probably because all of the traffic /. sent their way. The thing I'm looking forward to most is Office 2007 document support.

It will work eventually: http://openoffice.org/

This version is able to import files in the new Microsoft Word format, OOXML. These are recognised by the additional x in the file extension. OpenOffice.org's support for .docx, .xlsx and .pptx is currently read-only, but that is all you need to share documents with users of Office 2007, as you can save in the older Microsoft Office formats (which all Office 2007 programs can read).

A quick overview of the release is here: http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/modules.ph ... le&sid=751

Aah, and just 2 years after the spec for Docx is released the first limited support is out.

And in 4 years when people finally upgrade I can start using Docx!

Uhm... sorry I meant: OPEN SOURCE SUPREMACY TAKE THAT MICROSOFT!!!

I bet the next version will also let you save files in the Open XML format, and will probably have the Office 2007 style ribbon toolbar.
