Microsoft today released Hyper-V Server, a stripped-down version of Windows Server 2008 that includes only the Hyper-V role and very little else. It is completely free to download (yep, MS are giving away Windows Server 2008, albeit in a form meant only to run Hyper-V, I don't know if it would also be possible to use it as a basic file/app server etc or something though) and use (though guest OSes need to be licensed separately), and here's some screenshots of it running (in VMware, funnily enough...):

I think it's because there's no explorer.exe or any of the associated .dlls. so the ancient one is the only one available (isn't Server Core like that as well? - this seems to be like Server Core but with just the Hyper-V role instead of the few more that Core has)

Microsoft's competitor to VirtualIron SSE, Citrix XenServer Express and VMware ESXi. Just to be sure - the file to download for the English one is ServerHyper_MUIx2-080912.iso?

I doubt I can install it on the test rig as in Windows Server 2008 when adding that roll I get:

It is a Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor though

Thats because those processor series didn't have intel VT

The Core 2 Duo 6550 is the lowest one that has it.

Dumb question, can you use Microsoft's hypervizor to run Linux programs? [Debian or Gentoo]

@arthmx
It is not usable as a general purpose OS as far as it seems.

@Frozenport
You mean a complete Linux OS. Yes, there's support for SLES 10, I think. Don't know about other distros.

@Bender
I believe the E6300 is the lowest one to support VT. The "cheaper" series (Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo E4x00 and E7x00) lack it.

Hi,

We usualy use windows 2008 enterprise with hyper-v as a base for our linux stage servers, so offcourse i had to try this also.

So faar, i got it running, but i dont see anyway to start up the hyper-v control util, i guess its because its not there :-S

Gonna see if i can crap the hyper-v mangement package for vista and use it to connect to the local hyper-v server .. any other ideas ?

The Hyper-V server is not meant to be managed locally, if that's what you want to do. You are supposed to manage it from another machine running Vista or a full-blown Server 2008. It's the same with the competitors, the management console/tool is always running on another system.

Ya.. i figure that out aswell, but when i try to connect to it, i get a message that the RPC server is not running on it.

Anyone had luck at getting it running ?

No, the ISO is only about 1 GB so is clearly missing most of the components of Windows Server 2008.
