Quote:
Product: Acer Aspire One
Verdict: The very essence of the modern netbook: small, cheap, decent performance, lousy battery life
Rating: 91%
Suggested Price: £220 (8GB SSD, Linux) £230 (120GB HDD, Linux) £250 (120GB HDD, Linux, 1GB RAM)
Online Price: from £219.97

Quick Review:
Looks great, has a great screen, great specs and performance, but a lousy track pad and lousy battery life. It could have been so much more if a few more pounds were spent on the mouse and battery.

I've been looking into getting a netbook, so far I'm undecided between the MSI Wind and the Eee 1000. The Aspire one looks nice but i'm not sure about the smaller screen.

The screen doesn't put me off but the dodgy trackpad and lousy battery life would. I can't stand bad battery and mice.

I use wireless mice a lot, so thats not such a problem, but the battery life would bother me.

Ah well at home I use a wired optical mouse but out and about or in bed/downstairs I use the touch pad, so I like one that works. Some of the old laptops I have here do have really awful touch pads. It makes you wonder how people put up with them back in the days they were mainstream.

Battery life is another must for me. I like to aim for 3-4 hours, and this laptop will do 3 at a push, which is sufficient for me at the moment.

I got an EeePC 701 4 months ago (4Gb SSD Model) and it's by far my most used PC now. When it comes to buying a new one, I'll probably just get one of the newer ASUS EeePCs (Though preferably one of the smaller ones, The 701 is just the right size for me)

Battery life is important in a netbook, I generally get about 3 hours from my Eee, and that'd be with WiFi being used a fair bit and the screen at a medium brightness setting. I wouldn't really want any less.

I also don't consider the SSD space, RAM or Processor to be an issue in my EeePC.

I think that testing these netbooks with GIMP, manipulating 2048x1366 image is a bit irrelevant as well, You certainly wouldn't want to be editing sizable images like that on such a small screen, so it doesn't really matter whether it *can* do it.

The new Eees (1000s and 900s) can push up to 7 hours on the 6 cell batteries, which is quitre impressive.

I bought an Acer Aspire 5100 about a year ago. Its mouse pad seems to work fine, but I never use it since I have my USB mouse. When I first bought it, its battery life was about 2 hours. I have the battery put away now (it's serving as more of a desktop more than a laptop), but the last time I was on vacation a few weeks ago, I got a good hour and a half out of it I believe. It's a good machine.
