Intel has detailed plans for its next generation of CPUs which will be based on a further refined version of its current 45-nm high-k manufacturing process technology.The new CPU core codenamed "Dunnington" will be a Xenon server chip with 6 cores and 16 MB of cache,talking the transistor count up to a massive 1.9 billion.Dunnington CPUs should be available in the second half of 2008.
Intel has also revealed more information about its upcoming Nehalem architecture, which will be seen in the successors to todays Penryn chips.The architecture will be scalable with room for upto 8 cores on a single die and support for simultanious multithreading.It will also include an on-die memory controller much like AMDs current designs and use triple channel DDR3 RAM
