Now Leaked: Longhorn Build 4051 Debug x86

Post by hounsell »

I'm not sure how many people are interested in this, as it is hardly an exciting new build, just being the debug version of the existing 4051 x86, but I have decided to leak it anyway...

Originally, this was going to be part of the release a fortnight, but when I missed this last release, I decided to leak it elsewhere too. I had promised some people this nearly 3 weeks ago, and I thought it couldn't really wait past this week, so I plan to make it available this week.

Andy, I have finished uploading it to the BA Server, but if you could wait a few days while I upload it to a public server as well, I'd appreciate that.

Here is information about me leaking it, Here is a small bit of information about the build, and here are some screenshots

Edit: Now leaked. It is available on the Betaarchive FTP

What is the difference between a ''normal'' build and an debug build?
I have read it somewhere but forget what it said and were it was.

And i never really understanded it, the difference.

Yeh, its just a few debugging tools, its labelled debug, and has a different startup routine, starts off like safe mode, then goes onto a boot screen, and it runs checkdisk on every boot.

Like I said, It's not anything particularly new or exciting, but its something unleaked, and when i posted information about it on joejoe a few weeks ago, a few people were interested in it.

As a note though, it seems to be more picky about the hardware it installs on. It blue screened when I attempted to install it in VMWare, it only worked in Virtual PC (which it came with a copy of, specifically so you could use the build). I haven't tried it on native hardware however.

Are there debug builds for other architectures? (x64, ia64)
Also, do you have 4051 ia64 by any chance? (not that i want to use it, just for collectioning pourposes, plus one day if i will get ia64, i might want to install it)

Yeh, I have the debug and normal builds for all of x86, x64 and ia64. I may leak them later, Ill just have to persuade a certain person to let me leak them... ¬.¬

Nah, but they are a bit greedy like the scene. Its a shame that he's a friend, and I don't really want to destroy that for Longhorn. However, I'll work on it. I have at least one other thing coming, from the same set of PDC DVDs, but not a build of Longhorn

i think the normal version is better.
it's intresting that microsoft choose 4051 for a major release filled and stuff with nothing? just a working kernel

A debug build is more than debug tools. Actually, the debug tools themselves aren't what is important about them, as you can use any one of the multitudes of other debugging tools out there.

The key to these are DEBUG SYMBOLS. Without these symbols, debugging becomes almost worthless.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debug_symbol

What do these debugging tools allow us to do? I know it allows MS to find bugs and assist them in fixing them. But are they any use to us?

unless you're a developer, you got no use to it.
these dubug symbols are inplanted in windows to help devloper analysis how their program excuate in this windows evironment and help fix the error. Checked builds does everything step by step which is slower than the FRE builds which just skips the debugging codes when loading.
So, this means the orginally leaked build of 4051 was the one to install if you're going to try longhorn.

This check build isn't the one that you would want to try if you don't know what is a checked (debug) build. Checked builds also eccounter more errors during installation, so highly not recommanded.
