WZT has published some info about recent Windows 8.1 Update 1 Build 9600.16606 (full build tag 9600.16606.winblues14_gdr_lean.140126-2042).

According to Wzor, this build has the option "Load to desktop" turned on by default, so out-of-the-box you go to the desktop, not Metro start screen.

Also Metro apps in this build seem to have new default title area on the top with close and minimize buttons plus app icon that opens the menu (this menu is currently available in Windows 8/8.1 via right-click on the left top corner of metro app). These changes were also predicted by Paul Thurrot some time ago. (Actually it looks very similiar to Windows 1.x design lol)

Accroding to Wzor, he won't leak anytime soon since he is beware that current builds are individually signed so MSFT can identify source of leak.

Not a huge fan of all this "backpedaling" lately... Not expecting anyone to be an expert or know this information yet (besides Wzor) but can you disable all these "desktop menus" for metro apps? It makes it look more cluttered and I'm not a huge fan of change ;) Microsoft is trying to make it easier to use Windows Store apps but at what cost, so much for content before chrome.

OMG. I really hope so. Maybe I am the minority, but I prefer the Modern GUI as it is, and have learned to use it as my start menu.

This means from now on leaks will be very few (if any at all) and will happen at least after RTM date...

I did a thourough check of the screenshots for my BetaWiki article, so here I'm posting my findings about the changes in this build:

  • Metro apps have a title bar, with close/minimize buttons and the ability to "Split left/right" when you right-click it
  • Windows boots directly to desktop by default
  • Control Panel item in metro PC Settings
  • SkyDrive renamed to OneDrive (in PC Settings and start screen)
  • 200% and 250% DPI scaling modes added to control panel (in 8.1 RTM, to get these values you have to go "custom"), 250% is the default on screens with more than 1800 vertical lines
  • Shutdown button on the start screen*, doesn't show on less than 8" tablets to prevent accidental shutdown
  • Search button on the start screen*
  • Instead of metro bars (top and bottom) a context menu appears when you right-click an app on the start screen*
  • Pinning metro apps to desktop taskbar*
    *(introduced in 9600.16596)

I hate when people keep builds to themselves, but at least we have screenshots.

'Boot to desktop by default'?
This is not a good idea on tablets....(and probably on desktops as well...)
It'll be better if an option to boot directly to the desktop is available during setup itself(OOBE).
And title bars on Metro apps? Looks odd. Maybe good for desktops , but not for tablets.

Maybe "Boot to desktop by default" is only for desktop windows.
this screenshots from windows for desktop (PC), not from Win RT
Windows (RT) on tablets is installed by the producer so he decides to enable "Boot to desktop" or not.

Agreed it would be nice as an option although, interesting that the metro screens have such an ugly bar hope its a hover over bar.

It seems that the 8.1 update 1 isn't going to boot directly to desktop by default. At least the latest news claim it won't: http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-to-hide-metro-start-screen-with-windows-8-1-update-1-7000025836/ and Windows 8.1 Update 1 Won’t Boot Directly to Desktop by Default

MS resigned from the Aero (and Aero Glass) so anything is possible

As reported by AngerWZR currently title bars / taskbar appear only on mouse-hover, so it should be ok with tablet / touch displays. And I'm pretty sure they will not turn on "load to desktop" feature by default on touch devices. Seems like it could be a default option for desktop PCs only, and it's ok.

Title bars only on hover? Odd and bad , considering that we wouldn't want the title bars to come up if we right-click on the top of an app?
