Many users hope that Windows 8.1 can make a difference with Windows 8. If, however, all will emerge not as successful, Microsoft may resort to another update, called Windows 8.2. So, by the way, Windows 9 will be delayed. After all, it is the right decision, because the same Windows 7 was developed based on Windows Vista, and now is the most popular in the world.

If Windows 8 is at least partly a branding failure - which, in my opinion, it is - then why would Microsoft continue to use the Windows 8 brand to market an alternative? Windows 7 was only successful because Microsoft learned their lessons with Windows Vista when it comes to how to market a modern OS, not for any real technical reason. We'll likely see a Windows 8.2 regardless of Windows 8.1's reception, I can imagine.

Also your source link isn't working.

All Microsoft operating systems!
I was just reading several articles about how some people still use Windows XP (let alone Windows Vista or Windows 7!). And likewise, they are discussing how people will struggle to keep it alive once Microsoft finally drops support for it.

Let's hope that Windows 8.1 convinces the XP-using people of the world to upgrade. If they find that what was introduced in Windows 8 is much more complete and finished in Windows 8.1, then they just might decide to make the switch. If not, then it will once again prove my point that people are simply missing out on a great deal of new features and added functionality by remaining with the outdated operating system.

The only different between plan A and plan B is Windows 8.2 may be a free upgrade for Windows 8 owners but Windows 9 will never be. Hope that Windows 8.1 will not fail or Windows 9 will be delayed again.

There has never been versions of Windows free, except when MS gave Windows 98 copies.

He said Windows 8.1 will be free for Windows 8 users, which is equivalent to Windows 7 SP1 being free for Windows 7 users. Service Packs etc. have always been free. Windows 9 will not be free.

Didn't know Windows 98 was given out for free though, sounds cool, and an interesting thing to do.

If I remember correctly, Windows 98 SE was given out for free for Windows 98 users.

Actually i really like Windows 8 the only thing they really messed up is the Metro or Modern UI. If it would be a Startmenu-like Interface it would be ok but an App-based OS on Desktop is pretty [censored] up. I am very curious what they are planning now but i don't think that they can get further on NT6 Engine. I also thougt about using Hackintosh. We will see what the future brings.

With no doubt , they will not need it , considering what we have seen so far from the leaked version .

Windows 98 wasn't released for free. Windows 98 SE was released in a Step Up version for users of Windows 98 and an upgrade version for users of Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Windows Me was also released in a Step Up version for Windows 98 SE users and an upgrade version for older versions of Windows.

Probably, he would be referring to "Promotional" copies, which if I remember correctly, were free.

windows 8 is big fail from Microsoft (default metro ui without choice), for serious work I don´t want use fingers on touch display of laptop or tablet ... I am old school user who want classic environtment without some "fashioned cool features like aero ..) and use mouse and hotkeys ...

I hope that Microsoft knows it via feedback from ordinary users ... Microsoft gave a chances to Apple with OSX and maybe Apple use it in higher penetration ...
