Thanks to Paul Thurrott for the details:

Microsoft this Friday will ship the final pre-release version of Windows Vista and, unexpectedly, will name the release as Release Candidate 2 (RC2). Previously, Microsoft had publicly asserted that it would not ship an RC2 milestone release of Windows Vista. But don't let the name fool you: RC2 is really just a standard interim build of Vista and will not be given out to millions of users as was RC1.

The RC2 build is 5743, and Microsoft is currently testing it internally. As with the previous interim build, 5728, RC2 will be given out to beta testers, MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and a random, limited selection of Consumer Preview Program (CPP) members

It's here :D http://download.windowsvista.com/previe ... wnload.htm

Edit: I now have the build, after 25 minutes downloading! YAY :)

As it was downloading, I thought how different things are going to be after this build: I've been looking at new builds of Longhorn/Vista as they've come out for years now, and now this is the end! I can hardly remember a time before the whole Longhorn thing, and now we've got the very last pre-RTM build...

Downloading to the FTP . Give it 2 hours or so to complete and be moved.

I managed to get this build working in VMware too - it seems as though the "missing CD drive driver" error can be avoided if you mount the image with Daemon Tools and then use that virtual drive in VMware. I think my virtual machine is also set as Server 2003 rather than Vista, though I'm not sure if that's necessary.

It works really well in VMware actually - it's quite nice and fast.
