I downloaded it, tried it for a few days, and deleted it, deciding that since I own Windows Vista anyways, why try some beta server OS that is so similiar to one that one already owns?

I don't run any servers, so I didn't have the faintest idea how to even set up one with Windows Server 2008. I used it as a general purpose OS for a few days, and went back to Vista as usual, with its much prettier GUI.

But I like the new PowerShell though. Even though I haven't touched MS-DOS commands in years...

You can actually get the Vista interface on Server 2008 if you want it, though you have to install it separately.

People who don't have Vista yet might like it. It's essentially a Windows Vista bloated with server-related components. And it also seems to be a temporarily free Vista as well!

Also, it seems that the beta is lasting until April 8, 2008, so one should have plenty of time to play with it.

It's not a "bloated Vista".

I think he was saying that it's Vista but bloated with the addition of Server components - though of course you don't have to have any of the server bits running (or even installed) if you don't want them, and it is actually a less bloated OS than Vista overall.

Yes, that is indeed what I meant to say; sorry for any misunderstandings.

Windows Server 2008 does run far more faster than my copy of Vista, I must say. But not faster than my copy of Vista de-bloated with vLite.

You can download it off of Microsoft's website; just fill out a form and you'll be given a link and product activation key by them.

Download speeds are pretty fast, BTW. Took me 6 hours to get the 1.8 gigs.

Isn't that only Beta 3 though, not this updated CTP? Presumably to get this CTP you had to be invited to the special closed beta?

Yes, only beta 3 (6001.16510) is publicly available.

I got the normal ISO from RS. Now I still need the Web-Server ISO.

Can someone please upload it? :) :)

What I don't get is why they still give it build number 6001.

They'll only increment the sub-build number. I don't think they'll change the build number once more for 2008.

Is this an English only release or are there LanguagePacks for it?

@empireum Thanks for the screenshots; no other way for me to see it :)

Can anybody say what the memory requirements are like (in practice, not according to MS :P)?

Hmm I had run it with 1024MB - with good performance and dwm enabled. If you run it without this gui features it would take not much resources i think.

@emp : yeah thx for the screens

@Luckie : If I had understand empireum he sad you can buy the beta 3 german for 12€

You're welcome. Well, it doesn't run too bad with 512MB of RAM (but that should be considered as the absolute minimum and only serves well for light demand), I'd say 1024MB are fine. It all depends on what you want to run on it.
