Nice, public links :D

What exactly is new in this build? On Paul Thurrott's site he says there are a "few surprises on the road to RTM" but he doesn't elaborate on what those are ... all the screenies look very much like RC1. So, what has changed?

Anyone knows, what's the difference between this and the previous build?

Btw. I won't use Vista as a main OS, until there'll be a n-lite alike thingie for this, and I can kick the waste out of it.

I really like old LH builds and i have almost all of them. but now, after 5308 i dont see big difference with them. I like the aero from 4074. Thats my fav build ever. 8)

I know this rather goes against the grain, but I had a much better experience with Beta 2 than this new build. Beta 2 installed and ran fine, with all the VMware hardware installed automatically during setup (except sound as Vista doesn't support VMware's sound card).

However, I downloaded 5728 from Microsoft's public links, and immediately found that I couldn't install it in the usual way - it booted from the DVD, let me select the language and click Install Now, but then said "A required CD/DVD drive device is missing" and stopped there. So instead I installed it from within an existing VMware Windows installation, which seemed to work OK (although it took hours and hours, while Beta 2 was really quick (direct from the DVD, not from another Windows). But then I find that there is no CD drive and no Ethernet card installed in Vista (despite them working in Beta 2), so I'm pretty limited - I can't install VMware Tools, can't install any drivers and I can't activate! It also feels slow compared with Beta 2, but that could be the lack of VMware Tools as that usually speeds things up a bit.

Also, is anyone else worried by the mess that the Classic Start Menu is in, weeks away from the RTM? A mixture of XP, Longhorn 4074 and Vista icons, a very poor quality left-hand band where it says “Windows Vista” (for some reason they also use a very grainy image in XP, 2003 and WinFLP), and in the Customise dialog for the Classic menu there’s an XP icon and a 95 (!!!) icon! I have told Microsoft about this, but they probably won't take any notice of me!

I upgraded from 5600 (I've been upgrading for the last several builds). Only problem is it booted up to a black screen a couple times during install, let it set and it was fine.

My only complaints are the lack of active desktop, and the power button on the start menu should bring up the XP style window, nut hibernate the computer. New users aren't going to find that little damn triangle.

I got a blue screen after a reboot during the install - I think it said something like USB mode driver. Let's just hope they can get everything sorted in these last few weeks now.

Paul wrote "few surprises", not "a few surprises". The meaning is quite the opposite.

There are a number of updated icons in this build, including the user folders.
