Hello Centro Beta participants and contributors,

Big News! Microsoft is planning to release a Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Windows Server Code Name "Centro" in the next few weeks. We look forward to your continued participation with Windows Server "Centro" and are really excited to receive your feedback on the upcoming CTP. The team is looking for confirmation we have it right, and your feedback can and will directly impact the design of this exciting new product!

1. Read through the requirements
2. Take the survey (mandatory to gain access to the CTP)
3. Receive the CTP when it becomes available

Windows Server "Centro" is built on Windows Server 2008 and provides an integrated server and management system for midsize businesses. The upcoming CTP includes many new Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 based components, as well as updates to the server applications that shipped in Windows Server "Centro" Beta 1 (updated versions of System Center Essentials 2007, Exchange Server 2007 and ISA, as well as new updates to setup, Active Directory domain join functionality and a host of other improvements). The team has done a tremendous amount of work to ensure a smooth experience for you. How are we doing and what do you think of our progress? Let us know!

We are looking for actionable and broad feedback from a wide range of testers. With this CTP, we will be providing newsgroup support from the product team, and will be actively accepting bugs from participants. To be a successful Centro CTP tester, you will need to meet the hardware requirements and be willing to participate and provide feedback.

Please be aware that Windows Server "Centro" is Microsoft Confidential, and you will be required to accept the terms and conditions of participation detailed on the Connect site. Please take a moment to read through the hardware requirements below. If you meet these requirements, please go up to http://connect.microsoft.com/centro and take the survey.

To install Windows Server "Centro", you need three physical servers and the associated network hardware. Ideally, the servers should be configured identically, although this is not a requirement. The minimum hardware requirements are as follows:

· 64-bit (x64) processor
· 60 GB hard-disk drive
· 2 GB RAM Management Server (4 GB recommended)
· 2 GB RAM Messaging Server (4 GB recommended)
· 2 GB RAM Edge Server
· DVD-ROM drive
· 1 network adapter (2 in the Edge Server)

If you have additional questions, please feel free to send mail to the team at mailto:centbeta@microsoft.com.

Thank you,
Kevin Beares and The Windows Server "Centro" Product Team

Is there a way to emulate 3 servers connection for Centro, for example using VMWare?

I don't see why not ... you can easily set up 3 servers and a virtual LAN in VMWare, so it would appear as the three seperate servers that it requires. I'd give it a try, the only thing you could lose is some precious RAM. :P

I thought one of the servers (can't remember which one) that makes up Centro won't install in a virtual machine though? I thought I saw that in the feedback section on Connect, certainly some of the testers have had problems virtualising all of the servers.

PS you might want to change the topic title to include "CTP", as we've already had Centro, this is just an updated build ;) It should be quite a big update though as the last one (Beta 1) was based on LH Server build 5600, whereas it looks like this will include Server '08 Beta 3.

Yes :( It consists of three servers, all of which have to be 64-bit.

Do you not mean "last 32-bit server OS?"

The Centro CTP became available today - it's on Connect now, or you can wait for the disc shipment that they say will come. Apparently it's built on Server 2008 Beta 3, and there's over 10 GB of it! If you're not on the beta yet, you can still sign up with invitation code Extr-GHBC-JCJM

Actually they have gone record as saying Server 2008 is their last 32-bit OS.

What exactly is this equivalent to on the Server 2003 side, or is it a entirely new setup?

Entirely new, I'd say. Something like SBS, but slightly "larger". Something like BackOffice SBS vs. BackOffice.

I got it off connect and burned it, now I just need to install it. The installation takes too long, I'm going need to find more time to test it. :(
and it's 64bit only.

Are they burned or pressed discs this time, just out of interest?

Anyone installed this build yet?

I had the latest Server 08 DVD's turn up a few days ago...
It's odd seeing the 64bit as just labelled as the operating system
& the 32bit as being labelled 32bit, as if it's no longer the norm...
Not so long back the 32bit was the norm, & the 64bit was labelled as such...

Microsoft is definitely beginning to move their servers to 64-bit now. Exchange 2008, for instance, won't install on a non-64-bit system. There's a test version which can be tested on 32-bit, but no one uses those for production purposes. I suspect that they'll be doing this with all their software from now on; it's unlikely that it won't take off.

As a x64bit user I say its about time! Its been 4 years since I have been using x64 and very few applications can actually take advantage of x64...

MS claims that .Net 2 can but they are eithier lying or the advantage is poorly coded... :(

Hopefully MS will optimize their Terminal Services more for x64... Currently the performance boost has been neglegable...
