The creator of phpBB officially resigned as of 30th April 2007. Could this be the end of future phpBB updates?

more like a downgrade IMHO....

and that's the beauty of opensource..
one dude steps down, and theres a thousand others ready to fill in...
in fact, there doesn't even need to be an Admin!
its not like the founder is the only one working on phpBB... one due starts, then a hundred join the project if its good (phpBB), then the Admin LEADS the project, and helps with everything.... then when he/she feels like it, admin steps down, and someone fills the place... in the mean time there are hundreds of unofficial codes who do work with the code and make their own updates so even if the entire team was killed in a halarious chicken stampede, phpBB would live on...
plus there are like a billion phpBB derivatives floating around...

Since many many years ago, theFinn had no longer been actively developing phpBB. This had been left to Acyd Burn et al. for the longest time.

In addition, phpBB picked up quite a few developers during last summer (not quite sure of the exact time period).

Didn't that used to be the case, but then they changed it so that there's no shareware version anymore?

Yeah, there's the IPB 2.0.0 Unlimited Trial, which you can use as much as you want for "trial" purposes except you'll have a copyright notice down the bottom of each page saying that it's a demo. They stopped making the unlimited trials after about 2.0.0 (latest version is 2.2.2).

The IPB 2.0.0 Unlimited Trial isn't a really good idea though because it has some big security holes that let you grab someone else's login key, which combined with something that can change your cookies (web developer toolbar in firefox for example) lets you login to the forum as someone else.

I highly doubt that it will be the end of PHPbb because if it was with that announcement it would of also said that PHPbb will no longer be developed.

at pr0gram the pr0grammer: You just reminded me of Andy_tek's forums using the IPB Trial.

It's not. James hasn't been involved in the project for nearly two years, this is just when he finally came to terms with it. Previously, it was primarily under the guidance of Paul Owens (psoTFX), it's mainly been under Meik's (acyd burn) and Jon (shs`)'s guidance.

As per the official announcement (link):
Quote:
The now newly independent phpBB still has the same active contributors and will continue to support the stable phpBB 2.0.x and develop the next-generation phpBB 3.0.x, with James having already allowed the transfer of the www.phpBB.com domain for a majority share of the financial assets that have been generated by the project via advertising to date, so as to minimise disruption to phpBB's users.
