Forum rules

Please read the following rules before posting a download request in this area:

1. Don't post a request if you have under 10 posts as stated on the front page. If you do anyway, it will be deleted without further notice. This also applies to other members: If you see a request by someone with less than 10 posts and it hasn't been deleted yet, please don't reply to it.
2. Don't request for warez or any copyrighted software. Only betas (no matter how old or new) and finals of operating systems and applications that are at least 10 years old and therefore classified as abandonware are allowed to be uploaded to and shared on the BetaArchive FTP server.
3. If you have your own FTP server where you'd like other members to upload what you're looking for to, please don't post its login details in any open forum as that will probably lead to abuse. Post the login details in the Private Servers section instead.
4. Check that we don't already have the file on our FTP servers. If you don't have access to the FTP servers then ask someone who has (a moderator for example).

I got sick of 7 and wanna go back to vista but noticed my DVD is x86. It's a Home Premium RTM. OEM CD. Will it's key work on a x64 DVD and will it work on a SP1 DVD. AFAIK this isn't warez cos it has the trial function

Unfortunately it IS still warez since Microsoft doesn't provide it freely themselves, trial or no trial. And if they did you better grab it from them, faster servers :). And if it weren't warez we would carry the files already in our archives.

This is why we don't carry Vista, Windows 2008 or any of the Longhorn (and future Win7) ISO:s that do have a limited "trial" period where you can use the OS without a key, it's simply not deemed to be safe since Microsoft has never had a clause that says "distribute freely in trial mode" when it comes to Vista and Win2k8. In this case it's better to be safe than sorry.

If you find such clause at Microsoft HQ then please let us know and we might provide a solution for your dilemma. Until then RTM Vista/Win2k8 are considered warez and thus banned from BetaArchive until the time comes where it's considered to be "abandonware".

Edit: And I am keeping this thread open for a while since it's good sometimes to be able to discuss these things...

Ok, If anyone wants Server 2008 you can get it off MS. Site (no technet/msdn needed)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Microsoft are very fussy about piracy and if someone from MS (they search the internet and send C&Ds) has seen this site there probely keeping an eye on it. No C&Ds have been sent and hosting betas is all ready cutting it kinda fine so I understand about been safe. Lol at least microsoft are much better then nintendo

Well, Longhorn is the current Vista/Win2k8 line. I am more specifically referring to the Windows 7 line (Windows 7/Win2k8 R2) which will have the same "trial" mode enabled as Vista currently has, so BA can't provide Windows 7 RTM when it hits the stores either. BA will not need to host any of these ISO:s if Microsoft provides them freely from their website. And if Microsoft doesn't provide them freely then it means it is not trialware, so we can't provide them either :).

I for one would welcome the idea that Microsoft allowed me to download any ISO and allow me to buy a key directly off the internet. A lot of people sure has the bandwidth to grab a few gigs and it would sure save both of us some money, I would get a lower cost because Microsoft has a lower cost of providing it for me (no package, no disc, no extra paper junk, no shipping, manufacturing etc), and I would also cut all the extra cost by not having to go through a third party (which of course adds their own cut to the total price) to aquire a piece of plastic. So Microsoft needs to hop on the e-commerce train soon.

Good that you found it. Then people can grab it from there instead.

I agree partially with you regarding Nintendo, they sure are heavy on the C&D foot, but when it comes to providing e-content they are much better than Microsoft. Think about the Wiiware system on the Wii for example, and the same for the NDS (DSi more specifically). All we got from Microsoft when buying the ultra-expensive Ultimate was some lousy animated backgrounds and boring games, Nintendo provides us with quality games of the past :).

But I agree, Nintendo should loosen up on their old junk, it's not like I can hop into a store and get myself Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES or Zelda for the Gameboy Color anymore, so they should make them free. Or at least provide them on their website. But I guess they want the option to re-sell them on Wiistore.

I think your options are:
1. Try the alternative media site (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1 ... fault.mspx) but as it is OEM it probably won't work
2. Use a friends key and order one
3. Contact your OEM, which is what that site will say.
4. 'Locate' a download

Like maybe one of the Service Pack 2 Integrated ISOs that may reside on M1? ;)

I wander if the key will work on the M1 iso. It's not a big company (Dell, HP etc) but a system builder one (they sell the OEMs to anyone) and it's RTM not SP1/SP2.

RTM keys WILL work for post-RTM service packs. Windows Vista does not have a setupp.ini like Windows XP that controls the distibution channel.

Yes, Windows Vista key is generic for x86, x64, RTM, SP1, SP2, etc. You could obtain 64 bit disc from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/2057/ordermedia/default.mspx You do have to pay for shipping and handling.

Keys from older editions always work with newer editions, but not always the other way around by the way - I have an Ultimate key that came with a promotional copy of Ultimate SP1 and while it works with the SP1 (x86 or x64) DVDs, it doesn't work with RTM discs - I assume they must have added some additional keys in SP1 like they did with XP SP2c.

I guess this does not count as warez since its hosted by Microsoft....

After downloading the files, get some app which allows you to extract sdc-files (for example from here).

Thanks for reminding me. I totally forgot.
