Forum rules

Please read the following rules before posting a download request in this area:

1. Don't post a request if you have under 10 posts as stated on the front page. If you do anyway, it will be deleted without further notice. This also applies to other members: If you see a request by someone with less than 10 posts and it hasn't been deleted yet, please don't reply to it.
2. Don't request for warez or any copyrighted software. Only betas (no matter how old or new) and finals of operating systems and applications that are at least 10 years old and therefore classified as abandonware are allowed to be uploaded to and shared on the BetaArchive FTP server.
3. If you have your own FTP server where you'd like other members to upload what you're looking for to, please don't post its login details in any open forum as that will probably lead to abuse. Post the login details in the Private Servers section instead.
4. Check that we don't already have the file on our FTP servers. If you don't have access to the FTP servers then ask someone who has (a moderator for example).

Update that was supposed to make 3.11 somewhat like 95, went the way of Neptune and never flew.

Quote:
Windows 3.15 was the preliminary name of a major update for Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Windows 3.1. It was expected to include a taskbar similar to the one in Windows 95 (then Chicago), an improved task list application, a GUI-based disk defragmenter, improved multi-user functionality, and a few other minor improvements. It was never released because the interest of a such update was low, and that Microsoft was more focused on releasing Chicago on schedule rather than delaying Chicago and release the Windows 3.15 update.

Does anyone by chance have any build of this?

I've never heard of plans for an offical update for 3.1 to give it the 95 interface - anyone else? There's Calmira, but that is a third-party program, not made by Microsoft. Also there's NewShell, which is similar to what you describe but was for NT 3 (it was released as a beta and gave NT 3 the Explorer shell, but it was never finished)

The screenshot there looks the same as Windows 3.1 but with a taskbar with an icon for each of the loaded applications - looks like it could be interesting to see but it must be pretty rare if no-one else here has heard of it. I wonder if there's much else that's different from 3.1 apart from the taskbar?

Do you know whether it was actually released outside of Microsoft (to MSDN subscribers, beta testers etc)? If it wasn't then there's probably little chance of finding it, sadly.

Interesting find ... though in my Googling I found some conflicting information. I found a site that mentioned Windows 3.15 was like Windows 3.1 with Japanese language extensions :? Maybe these two were developed side by side with the same version numbers? I don't know

Is there any way to get in contact with the guy who posted the wikipedia article?

It's Simplified Chinese. And you're lucky. Chinese is my mother language :)
I just read the info, and it has nothing to do with the Windows 3.15 you guys think of. It is indeed a system cleanup tool named "Washer Pro." Doesn't know why it has the title of Windows 3.15 :?

Quote:
Some measure of standardization...

Aside from its effect on prices, the introduction of DOS/V has had another, perhaps more significant, effect on the PC market in Japan. It has helped to standardize what was formerly a market of numerous competing and incompatible systems into a much s impler three-way face-off. The three camps are now the NEC PC-98 standard (including Epson 98-compatibles), AT-compatibles (DOS/V machines), and the Apple Macintosh. In addition to IBM, Compaq, and Deli, major Japanese companies like Fujitsu and Toshiba a re now joining the DOS/V camp by offering AT-compatibility and DOS/V operating systems.

The viability of DOS/V increased further in 1993 with the introduction of Microsoft's Japanese-language version of the Windows 3.1 operating system. According to Microsoft Japan, 1.46 million packages of Windows 3.15 were shipped in Japan during its f irst year on the market. Windows in its present form continues to sit on top of DOS, the current releases of which are version 6.2 from Microsoft and 6.3 from [BM. Microsoft is working on the next version, which is likely to be available before the end of the summer, according to Kota Sekino, program manager of the Windows/MS-DOS Department at Microsoft Japan. Microsoft is extremely bullish on MS-DOS sales, expecting 1994 sales in Japan of 500,000 units for current versions.

The trend now is towards preinstalling software on machines before shipping. Microsoft estimates that 70"/0 to 80'1/0 of AT-compatible machines in Japan now come with Windows pre-installed. (This compares with 90% or more in the US.) The popularity of Windows 3.2 has extended to the NEC PC-98, with NEC offering its own v ersion of Windows 3.15 in addition to its own DOS operating system.

..what the Heck is DOS/V ??

Win/V

Briefly, Win/V is a collection of font and driver extensions to English-language Windows that provides a Japanese-language environment. The implementation is so well done that it allows you to run most Japanese Windows applications just as if you were using Windows 3.15. Why would you want to use Win/V instead of Windows 3.15 in the first place? One reason, as you indicate in your question, is that most corporations require users To run a standard environment so that network administrators can maintain it. With Win/V no special hardware or other low-level software is needed: not even DOS/V. Any user with a standard 486 PC, English Windows, English-language keyboard, and standard printer (such as a Hewlett Packard LaserJet III or IV) can run most popula r Japanese-language Windows programs.

Where i can download windows 3.15 Question

If you had actually read the older posts made in this topic, you would have known that
a) noone here has Windows 3.15 and
b) its existence is doubtful because the only proof we might have that it exists is a screenshot that could easily have been faked.
