Note the "I think" bit.

I was looking on some russian sites for stuff to do with the Half Life 2 beta, and I came across this, I've downloaded it and it seems a lot like the retail (I haven't tried to play)

Its build 738 apparently, I'm not sure if this is the retail build or not

Want me to upload it somewhere? (It does look a lot like retail, files wise)

Please upload it! I'd love to get into the nitty gritty of it, just to see if it's the real deal.

May be retail because according to this link:
http://hothardware.com/Articles/Diamond ... und-MX300/

This guy used "Half Life Build 738" to get ratings on a video card.

Yeah, I saw that, I was thinking maybe valve gave him a beta to test it?

Anyway, I've put it on http://rogeno.us/hl1.7z

I might be wrong but this seems to be the retail version.

I doubt that's the beta. The readme said 1.0, and hl.exe fileversion is 1.0.1.0.

The oldest public version is "Day One" (26.08.98). The 738 build was released in 30.10.98. I have a CD with it.

So does build 738 a beta? or a retail?

Sadly, its retail.

I'm starting to think that the 'HL1 beta' that everyone is looking for is just HL Day One.

Well, there are several compiles that never publically leaked but that are saved and stored away by people on the net. So I guess that's what everyone is looking for. But I doubt none of those versions will ever surface to the community.

Probably. IMO, not all peoples knows about this site. And inside that group probably there's one that have the files we all wants. So, what we can do is pray that they found this site and willing to share the stuff.

What is Half Life Day One? Is that version 1.0.0.5?

Day One is a pre-release version of HL1. It's near final.
Officially, it's version OEM.RC4.

It has a few minor differences, like the particle effects which are still Quake 1 style.

Q. Looking back on the whole OEM warez "scandal" do you think things should have been handled differently? How did the warez version get out so quickly in the first place? -Shawn Andrich

============================================================

A. A pre-release version (release candidate 4) of the OEM version was leaked by a temporary employee at one of the OEMs. I think the biggest concern we had was that some of the fansites were doing stuff that was going to spoil the game for people who weren't going download the pirated version.

However it's strange that the creator of the "Dank & Scud" Quake comics, released an issue using one of the pre-release builds (looks like it's from e3 '98), before Half-Life's release. Whether or not he got it from ID (he was in contact with them at the time), if not Valve, is still a question.
