Bolded text within a quote, its barely noticable that somthing has been bolded.

Any chance it could be made... bolder... changed to a font where bold is more noticable?

It looks fine to me... Do you have text size on normal as that can have an effect on the look of the font. It's never been changed since the forum opened so if you've just noticed now then it must be a browser fault. Can you post a screenshot of a bold quote so I can see?

Sitting a little more than two feet away from a widescreen 19 inch monitor, I cant really see a difference.

Well I'm not sure why yours looks like that but here is what it looks like on mine...

It looks identical to what J.Byrne posted here, and I guess font-antialiasing/-smoothing is the reason,
since your pic looks like it is disabled (which is the normal case on a server os).
But I dont really have a suggestion for another font, because all the fonts (I know) which would make
it more readable are looking terrible :?

Edit: damn, too slow ^^

Edit 2: Making the quote-font bigger would solve the problem...

That size is good, bold wise, anything smaller and its still hard to notice, not sure how well that size fits in aesthetically with the rest of the page though...

ADD: It was a 5pt increase from normal size.

You should turn off cleartype if you're using a TFT/LCD anyway, it only makes it look horrible if you ask me.

If I change the size of the quote, I have to change the size of all text, and that would make the site look awful.

Not sure who you were referring to with the server OS but I'm using Vista...

For the exact reason the basis of this topic is about... It makes bold text indistinguishable from normal... If text was supposed to be cleartype it would be cleartype by default, not as an option. Same with any image as well.

I prefer what I see to be crisp and clear, not distorted by some failed attempt to make it look better. Yes, cleartype works in some situations, but not all, and certainly not on a website where it was never designed to look that way.

It's on by default. It's on all of my machines, and friends and families machines. I have the same issue J.Byrne does, just never cared enough to mention it.

Well BA certainly isn't the only site thats going to suffer from this problem. I don't see why the website should cater for people who use a feature that makes the text indistinguishable.

If its that much of a problem for you, increase the text size via your browsers settings.

CTRL, SHIFT, + = Zoom in
CTRL, - = Zoom out (yes shift is missing deliberately)

I believe Firefox remembers the zoom settings on a per-website basis too so you can use it for some sites and not others quite easily without messing about every time you change sites.

Cleartype came around to make text easier to read. We have enjoyed printed text since Gutenberg and as you all know printed text has no jagged lines, so Cleartype makes all text more natural to read, making it more pleasing to the eyes. Since LCD:s are much sharper and exact in its pixel display running without Cleartype can me less enjoyable than on a CRT that has a natural smoothing out due to its inexact mesh.

Cleartype does however make the bold text less prominent because it smoothes out the edges. So yes, it's going to be a problem with fonts that has not been designed with Cleartype in consideration, which is the case with this forum. You can resize the fonts if you want (CTRL-mousewheel works too :) ) but it won't do much help. Changing the font would not be advisable since the forum has been designed around this font, if it's changed it has to be done by the phpbb group so all elements can be redesigned with it in mind. So yes, Andy sees it much more bold since he has Cleartype turned off, while J.Byrne has it turned on (so do I).

So in the end it's just up to the user really. I wish HTML had some support for a <noct> tag or something so you could display a section without Cleartype regardless of the system setting. I recommend people using Cleartype on LCD:s, but if you feel comfortable having it turned off then run it that way. Personally I will keep it on even if I sometimes don't see the bold text. It's just a too small problem to warrant a system change for me =).

Its not on by default in Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, which is my client OS -

Heres how you enable it

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Display applet
Click the Appearance tab
Click the Effects box
Click Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:
Select ClearType

NOTE: Bold reads fine for me, even with ClearType, but that just maybe Server 2003 :P

Yeah, it isn't on by default in XP/Server 2003. It is on by default in Vista/7.

I don't see why cleartype would make the bolded text in quotations much less noticeable than the normal bolded text.
