The code was custom built but the majority can be found on a script I made at http://www.abyssunderground.co.uk/scrip ... script.php. If you decide to use the code please acknowledge where you got the code and mention the website too.

I hope he likes it.

@Apache,

Apache sucks ;) Abyss Web Server is better. Its easier, faster (34% faster), has a native web GUI, no conf files to edit, nativly supports many scripting languages (php, asp, perl, python, ruby, ahtml) and my website in the first post (www.abyssunderground.co.uk) gives help on using it and setting it up, IF you can't figure it out yourself (and you will because its so easy). ;)

I have tried abyss and apache, but i much prefer apache. abyss was easier to set up but with the free version you can only have one host unless you buy the X2 version. With apache you can have as many hosts as you like. Abyss doesnt support htaccess. abyss isn't open source. apache is the most used http server on the internet. therefore in my opinion abyss sucks ;)

Easier to set up yes, which in my opinion is very important. Why spend 2 days setting up something to do the exact same job?

VHOSTS is a special feature for a reason. Since Abyss is a personal web server its unlikely you would need VHOSTS, hence the pro version which does have them.

Abyss doesnt support htaccess yet, but it will in the future.

Abyss isnt open source because open source programs are generally unstable, hence the number of crashes ive seen with Apache and zero with Abyss.

Who cares if its the most used? That has no meaning :)

Its a flawed argument anyway. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but since Im a proud supporter and tester of Abyss I stand by my decision :)

This site runs on Abyss by the way.

If they are modified by someone other than the original coder then its likely they don't know how the program works properly, therefore they're not going to be able to code in extra features properly unless they fully understand it.

Ive come across php scripts before that Ive had the same problem with. My status script as mentioned above was made from opensource code. It took me 3 months to get that code to work properly because it was made by someone else.

Why do you think so many people have problems with Linux but you rarely hear them about Windows? Makes you think doesn't it.

It doesn't take 2 days to set up apache, for a beginner it would only take a few minutes to get apache up and running.

Some open source programs are unstable, however apache isn't. apache has never crashed for me

if it is the most used server that means that people find it good and reliable to use. All the major web hosting companies use apache and i have yet to see a reputable web hosting provider that uses abyss.

It can take a newbie a long time, sometimes upto and over 2 days to get apache installed with php and all the other scripting languages they want to use on it, bandwidth limits set, etc etc ect. Most people move to Abyss for this very reason.

Do you know why all hosting companies use Apache?
1. Its compatable with all the webhosting scripts that have been made.
2. It comes with their OS's in the case of Linux.
3. Its free.

If a webhosting control panel was designed for Abyss (which it will be by aprelium when they bring out the new version) then a lot more people would decide to use it. Infact they would pay the $59.95 for the simplicity and ease of use.

I should mention there is no point in arguing since I have already made my decision ;)

if abyss was compatiable with webhosting scripts, came with os's and the professional was made free then abyss would be more popular.

I am not trying to change your decision. However after having tried abyss and apache, i prefer to use apache ;)

Looking at the server information page on abyssunderground .co.uk see that you run FileZilla FTP Server, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin. All of these are open source and are very reliable

Exactly. These scripts all come from their original authors, no modifications, however mods for apache come from 3rd party coders and therefore can be very unstable.

Oh my god are you on some sort of quest andy?

I love apache because its free, you get all the features AND YOU DONT HAVE TO PAY! The first time i set up apache was in ubuntu (and im sure it works the same in most debian based linux distros).

Code:
sudo apt-get install apache2

Woo done, set up! 2 days worth of effort rolled into one easy and simple to remember command.

And may i ask, what evidence have you got and are able to present to us that shows us what made your mind up.

While I know you've already made your decision, there's quite a bit of mistruth you're saying there :P Apache isn't actually that hard to get going. Hell I could get it going, and I'm certainly no software ninja. If you're stuck there's always XAMPP, which is a 70mb ZIP file with Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, etcetc. all ready to go in the box, without even installing anything. There's graphical tools for configuring Apache, ie. Webmin ... and, quite a few hosting places use cPanel, which makes it very easy to set up a web hosting place with a nice gui.

Hosting companies don't just use it because it comes with most Linux distros :P They use it because it's pretty good. Plus the whole licensing thing, if Apache does the same if not more (does abyss really not support htaccess??) than Abyss and isn't $59.95, and the owners of the data center have to buy licenses for 1000 servers, which is cheaper?

But anyway, I'm sure Abyss has its advantages too, like its low footprint, easy configuration, etc. To prevent a big flamewar, let's leave it at this: the best web server, is whatever floats your boat. :D

Or, for a 3.5MB download that extracts to 12MB, you can have Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, and eAccelerator.

You can also get the rest of the Apache modules for 750KB and the rest of the php modules for 2.8MB.

And yes, I made this my self. And it is slightly out of date.

The problem with XAMPP is that its not flexible enough for most people. Its a newbie setup, and thats it.

IIRC cPanel is designed to work with Apache and not Abyss

Another reason to get Apache :D

cPanel was only designed for apache. Since cPanel sucks anyway why bother. Abyss rules.

Plus, to avoid any more arguments that are petty, topic locked.
