Howdy all,

Few requests from around 2 weeks ago:

- User name above avatars now clickable, and takes you to the users profile (requested by zamadatix)
- Centered the user name above avatars to make it look neater.
- Neatened up the joined date, posts, location and favourite OS text with spacing/centering/drop lines. (comments on this?)

If I make any more changes today, I'll update this topic.

Andy (Admin)

Another update:

Turned off compression on the HTTP server.
It slows the loading of the site down by trying to compress an already compressed page. You should see a 10-15% increase in load speed on a fast connection. Dial-up users or users with a slow connection won't notice. I did toy with the idea of disabling all compression, until I noticed that an uncompressed forum index page was 60KB and a compressed page was 8KB. It would be unfair to dial-up users to turn it off just so the load time decreases for broadband users. (You would think it would increase with compression off and more data, but without compression the data is sent immediately instead of being compressed then sent, which takes about 1-3 seconds depending on server load).

Images also took longer to load if compression was on (about 4x longer in some cases) but this was never enabled, it was only enabled for html/php files, I just gave it a try to see if it helped.

Looks good.

The only small snag I have with the tidying up of the user info, is that if it's a short post like this will be and djrob's above, the information will just extend the post height (if you see what I mean, look under his sig and see the whitespace). That may well be just me, it's livable like most of life

(note, Posts, the post count does it really need a new line? just a thought)

And also i can notice the more responsiveness :)

Any chance you can also make the avatars itself clickable?

I don't really approve of the centralization of everything. It looks very odd to me.

Anyone else share that same view, or is it just me?

Just you I think, everyone I asked on MSN liked it and everyone here likes it too (besides you) :) Not every change is for everyone though, nothing can be perfect...

I like it as its does make it look nicer but it's also better you can see favorite OS now.

Changes always look weird. You'll get used to it.

I'm a big fan of the clickable names and avatars. The only thing I can think of is that all the info on the left makes very short posts take up a lot of space, like this one, especially if you have the "favorite OS" part set.

I'll work on that tomorrow, see if I can come up with a nicer and more compact solution.

That was kinda what I mentioned earlier, just better worded.

Gosh I feel like a grumpy old git today :/

Howabout you have the stats and stuff under the post from the person, almost like a 2nd sig, but it would be under the box where the text usually is (ill mock one up if you need a better explanation)

Good work. I really like this changes.

But I have something else to add. I noticed that when someone wants to say something offtopic, he/she uses [offtopic][/offtopic]. Maybe it's a good idea to make it looks nicer: change the background, frame, or something else. Now, it's not very pretty. :P
