Hello all,

As you know the BAv2 update is rapidly approaching (3 days away), but I've been having some thoughts about a conversation I had with mrpijey a few weeks ago about some changes to the forums we currently have.

Now, I thought it would be a good idea to remove off-topic discussion completely and replace it with two separate forums named "Lifestyle" and "Current Affairs". However mrpijey disagreed with the idea, but I want to propose it to you, the forum members. Its best to get several opinions rather than just one, and I'm sure mrpijey will agree when he reads this topic.

The forums will be:

Quote:
Current Affairs: A place to discuss topical issues and news.

Lifestyle: A place to discuss Hobbies, Food & Drink, Motoring, Fashion, etc.

This should "weed out" a lot of the totally irrelevant off-topic stuff that people have been posting since its no longer "off-topic" its actually topical discussion.

Does anybody think this is a good idea? Do you have any suggestions, comments or criticism about the idea? Please let me know your opinions.

Just renaming it from Off Topic would help immensely since people apparently think Off Topic = Hurf durf post whatever you can think of!

Perhaps there should be a Technology/Software orientated off topic, and a completely off topic, off topic, in which posts do not go towards peoples post counts...
What will happen to the old off topic section?

The old off-topic will become one of the other forums and topics moved over time.

We already have the Computer Discussion forum and the other hardware etc forums, but we don't have a "general" forum which is what these two will do for us.

Fashion?

I'm with Jabster on this, off-topic posts should not count as far as Advanced Members group goes. Advanced members is for people with a genuine interest in betas, posting in off-topic sections doesn't measure that.

I think that the off-topic still has to be there, but only than with a few more rules.

I'm pretty much fine the way it is.

However, some of you might be right that posts in the Offtopic discussions forum shouldn't count as far as your postcount is concerned.

I agree with that, but is that possible?

its how it is on 90% of forums, i agree with this idea and the idea of no extra count to postcount.

Either way with the decision, I am happy. You could say splitting the off-topic organizes the forum a bit more, and less room for random junk posts.

Then again you don't want to be over-run with too many categories.

And with the smiley's (it was mentioned), personally I hate (always have, always will) the MSN smiley's, too dull boring and outdated.
Trillian smileys, I like. Pidgin smileys, I like. Even AOL smileys are good - Image
It's just the dull look of MSN icons that I never liked.

Either way, a suggestion or something to look to.

I agree.

Emoticons, some other ones, the trillian are nice
Off-topic, do net let the name off-topic in the title, and split like andy said.
Also, that hack that kenoath posted should work nicely with those topics, (i mean the do not count posts)
So far as it goes with off-topic, it should be funny only and if it's really not about beta's it shouldn't be posted at all, the funny stuff topic is nice, that we should keep as off-topic.

My idea's, if you want more details, then MSN me (andy, mrpijey or mods)

I disagree with the idea. I think the best course of action is to simply turn off post count in the Offtopic forum, as so the posts that you consider "stupid" simply don't count for anything.

What about giving a forum a button for the Moderators that they can disable it for counting. I see that many people dislike that some people have many posts because of stupid ones, so maybe that is an idea.

I personally think that the stars have to work in a way like how effective you are, not how many posts. Maybe then the discussion about if something will count or not will stop.

I think it would be a good idea to disable the postcount or to make the number of
posts only visible for admins and mods. Same for the ranks.... This would end the
discussions about this and make every member "equal"....
