Free web hosting for BA members

Post by Andy »

THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Hello all,

Since we have a nice server and have done for some time now, I thought it was time to offer something for the members in the way of web hosting.

Note: Do NOT sign up if you do not intend to use the account.

There are 13 free hosting accounts currently active.

What do I have to do to qualify for this?
You must be a BA member of 3 months or more and have gained your access to the Advanced Members group.

What specs do I get?
You will get the following:

1 Sub-Domain in the form your_forum_name.betaarchive.co.uk (exception in some cases).

5GB of Disk Space which is not enforced but regular checks are performed to ensure you're not going over your limit.

Unlimited Bandwidth with speeds of up to 100Mbps, but subject to Fair Usage Policy (FUP) (see below).

PHP Version 4 but locked down to prevent un-authorised access to the system or running malicious commands/code.

1 MySQL Database plus phpMyAdmin for database control.

1 FTP Account with no restrictions.

1 E-Mail Address in the form your_forum_username@betaarchive.co.uk, with webmail and a control panel to change settings.

Are there any limits?
Yes. You don't get any main control panel as such. You will get a control panel such as phpMyAdmin, a control panel for the mail, and a webmail script. This hosting is basic, but totally functional.

The server does not support .htaccess.
A protected folder can be requested to be put in place if required.

Also, none of the following please:

1. Porn
2. Warez
3. Copyright material (e.g. MP3’s)
4. No spamming

What is the FUP?
The fair usage policy is simple. You can use as much bandwidth as necessary providing you don’t cause a problem to the rest of the sites hosted on the server. The FUP also applies to system resources, including but not limited to Processor and Memory usage.

There are no second chances if you abuse your account. It will be shut down without any warning, including all data hosted on the site. Because of this, make sure you keep a backup of the site yourself.

How can I sign up?
Be sure you comply with the qualifying rule and then PM me a password you'd like to be used for your hosting and whether you would like MySQL or not. Your account will be created as soon as I get chance and the info PM'ed to you.

I hope many of you will take advantage of this offer.

Would it not be possible to make a simple script linking to all the features or something?

Its been tried and failed because of the complexity of the servers XML configuration. Version 3, which will be available some time next year, will have an API to do this with in whatever way we like.

I thought you were already a part of the Advanced Members group. Didn't you download a few Builds from one of the servers back in December?

Its not fully compatible. The way Abyss works makes it physically impossible for zPanel to change Abyss's config.

There are now 13 free hosting accounts active but some people are not using them. Please don't sign up if you're not going to use it!!!

I will be getting in contact with those users who are not using their space soon. If no negotiation is made the un-used accounts will be deleted.

Members not using their hosting accounts have been contacted via PM, and they have 7 days to PM me back notifying me of their actions to use the account. Failure to do so will result in all data being deleted, including that in the main folder, MySQL databases and E-mail accounts.
