From now on you can also use DiscImageCreator to dump your CDs and DVDs.

DiscImageCreator is an advanced command line disc dumping tool found at https://github.com/saramibreak/DiscImageCreator and used by several preservation communities.

The only caveat is that if you want to dump CDs you will need a compatible optical reader (see website for details), you will get an error trying to dump the disc if your drive is incompatible. Use Alcohol120% for CDs if you're unable to use DiscImageCreator. But for DVDs any drive should work. The tool is not very easy to use for the novice, and it has lots of options to dump various disc formats, but for the common CD and DVD-based PC titles the command line is as follows:

For Data CD dumping (only with compatible drives!)

Code:
DiscImageCreator.exe cd [driveletter] [filename.bin] 16 /d8 /c2 1000 /q /ns /s 2

Example: DiscImageCreator.exe cd D Disc01.bin 16 /d8 /c2 1000 /q /ns /s 2

(add /sf for Safedisc protected discs, /ns for Securom protected discs)

For Data DVD dumping:

Code:
DiscImageCreator.exe dvd [driveletter] [folder]\[filename.iso] 16

Example: DiscImageCreator.exe dvd D Disc01\Disc01.iso 16

(add /c for DVD Video discs, this will take a considerable time to finish)

It must be BIN for CDs and ISO for DVDs.

Please name the disc after the disc number, if it's just a single disc then it's Disc01.

-

I have created a small ZIP file with the software as well as batch files for easy use. To run it unpack the contents to a folder and run one of the batch files. Follow the instructions.

There is an UI you can download and use with DiscImageCreator but I've found it to be problematic and complicated to use, so I opted for these batch-files instead.

If all this is too complicated or doesn't work then use Alcohol 120% according to our guidelines. I will not accept BIN or ISO files created from any other tools!

I'll be accepting these DiscImageCreator dumps on a trial basis, and if it works out I'll add it as an official dump format on BetaArchive along with some additional guides. Please leave feedback or let me know if there are any issues.

Thank you!

Edit: I've updated the batchfiles with new switches, and added additional batchfiles for Safedisc and Securom titles. The scripts also remove unnecessary files from the final CD dumps making it smaller (deletes SCM and IMG file as these can be recreated using the included files).

It generated over 2 GB of data from one CD. I don't know why it generates the bin twice: one for the disc and then copies for each track. Also - what is the use for the scrambled SCM file?

This fileset is simply a multipurpose set. If you have only a single session then the IMG and BIN will be identical, but if you're having multiple sessions, audio tracks etc then you will have a bin file for each track. All the BIN files combined will equal the IMG file.

The IMG file is used by the CloneCD .ccd file, the IMG file is used by the .CUE-file. The SCM file is a scrambled copy of the IMG file, i.e a raw copy of the track basically. It can be used to diagnose any track errors etc, but it's not something I will bother with. The SCM file can also be recreated manually if needed, same goes for the IMG file.

But for simplicity you can delete the SCM file and the IMG file, and upload the rest. I've updated the batchfiles to do this automatically now, along with some corrected switches.

Any hints how to interpret the subError file? There are neither errors in c2Error and mainError. The CD itself has no scratches. (Is there any tag that will make this fragment shorter?).
Code:

Sure, it just sucks when external services go down. That's why there's an image uploader on BA - because the image hosts were unreliable.

You can run the command with /nq switch.

I've once again updated the tools pack with an additional tool, ProtectionID. It may help you identify what kind of protection your CD has, and run the appropriate batch file accordingly. If you get a lot of SubQ errors like above then add /nq as a switch to the batchfile.

It seems that you need a drive compatible with scramble mode to use DiscImageCreator. What kind of drive does this refer to?

Yes, for dumping CDs you need one that supports scramble mode. But for DVDs you can use any drive. So if you can't dump CDs with DIC use Alcohol120% as usual.

I would like to confirm this because it is not officially listed, but is it a drive that supports the recommended drive = scramble mode?

Just try it, if it works then it should be fine.
