The source code files has already been removed, and it affects all the sections that began with [Source]. There is no estimate on when they will be back.

I can't speculate about what might or might not happen, for now all source code is banned.

Due to recent events it has come to attention to us that certain kind of files carry a much higher risk of being misused and misinterpreted. It's one thing to release binaries which requires extensive knowledge to trace and debug, but it's an another when you got the original developer code in front of you in all its glory. Every nuance, every method, every command and call just as the developers intended. This can, for an experienced debugger, lead to a very good understanding of how the developer thought when making the code, the methodology behind it, and for a debugger or coder with malice intent also a very good way of finding exploits within the source code. Even if the recent events and overreaction by the sensationalist-depraved media proved to be pretty harmless it shows that we need to be more careful what is being put online.

Therefore we are going to remove all source code compilations from this site. Any distribution of source code will also be prohibited and the only source code discussed must be linked to the developer site or an acknowledged code respository (such as Github, Sourceforge etc). This prohibition includes, but it is not limited to:

  • Any abandonware or beta software source code, original or modified.
  • Any core engine code (LithTech Engine, Source Engine, Unreal Engine, DirectX etc.).
  • Any source code packs or kits.
  • Any modification of such packs, kits or distributions.

It doesn't matter if it's deemed open source or not. We do not carry open source software and will not carry open source code. It also doesn't matter if the source code is freely distributed by the developer, if needed to be shared it should be linked to the original developer source.

Not to sound like I support people exploiting stuff but why remove Abandonware code like old Windows when no one uses them anymore like at all? I kinda like the idea of seeing what type of person the developers by looking at their code but there really isnt a point to make a new virus that says, messes up your entire computer in one click of a button without being asked about anything about it because one slip in the crack let that happen except oh wait, it is for windows 98 and is fixed in future OS' (including Windows ME) and the only person that probably would even have it is danooct1 as the creator sent him it in his forum and not the public. Personally, I don't know if you still use a Stone Age computer you found while traveling at Ancient Rome but it ain't going to affect future operating systems cause it will guaranteed to be fixed except if Microsoft or anyone else is slacking. Are you going to remove EVERY SINGLE THING just because a tech skiddy did that he might of used through trial and error?

Well that learned me to always archive every interesting Source Code pack I can find (like DukeNuken3D I thought of downloading it last week but forgot and now its gone)

and the worst part is code that Stephan shared on his github is gone too like WRKRazzle, OSBE, MinNT and souch (and noone forked it (I didn't forked it because sometimes I am still under impression that what comes to github probably won't be removed from it but from now on I will fork every source I am interested in immediately (and I don't care how much forks I have) because if I don't (and it only takes a secconds or two) it will be gone

Some of those are likely to come back (though who knows how soon). "Beneath a Steel Sky" might come back, for instance. It is currently freeware, and Revolution Games made the assembly code available to the community.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but are any punishments given for requesting and sharing source code?

We haven't deleted the files from existence, only from the FTP. If our policies should change in future we could restore those files. But for now, they're removed.

Might I suggest that ahem...individuals who have such things post them on archive.org where DMCA safe harbor rules apply, or on ...certain torrent sites and seed them?

Star Wars Galaxies source is actively maintained by a few groups so that's not lost:

https://bitbucket.org/stellabellumswg/
https://bitbucket.org/theswgsource

swgsource.com is an active dev community
