Did you pay for the certificate? I'm curious, cause I think I'd like to obtain a certificate for my servers.

I used www.startssl.com which offers basic security, which is all BA needs.

I'm not sure why you guys used a paid certificate when LE exists.

Andy would have to say for sure, but I think BetaArchive is using the free cert that StartSSL provides.

I use StartSSL's free cert which is valid for a year. I'd imagine other companies provide free SSL certs as well.

Well you still haven't said what kind of StartSSL certificate. StartSSL offers both free and paid.

I'm guessing it is the free one since it is issued by their class 1 CA.

So because it's a Chinese company we instantly shouldn't use it? That link provides no meaningful evidence as to why it shouldn't be used.

The problem is that, WoSign acquired StartCom, which is WoSign's upstream(root) trust provider.
and WoSign mistakenly gave out SSL Certificate for GitHub Domains to normal user. (and also ucf.edu )
even Mozilla has a wiki page listing its issues: https://wiki.mozilla.org/CA:WoSign_Issues

FYI, ycombinator comments about "Why I stopped using StartSSL" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11107740

Just BTW., Namecheap.com (like many (!) other hosting companies) is showcasing /selling the (cheap!!) Comodo certs, among others @

Code:
https://www.namecheap.com/security/ssl-certificates/comodo.aspx
I am NOT advertising for them, nor am I affiliated!.. Just find their web site /options really cool ++the price(s).

Thank you for the HTTPS (SSL), it always feels gr8!! :))

Edit: Comodo, directly @https://ssl.comodo.com/
Code:
https://www.comodo.com/e-commerce/ssl-certificates/secure-server.php
^^ Plus, bonus; seems interesting?!
