Fantastic !
Really great to see that Premiere Edition is real. It can be easily release of the year 2014.

Because we've been looking for it for years.

Chicago 34 (wish it was leaked)
Installed it and noticed some differences from 1.01:

-While it supports color in EGA mode, it is set to a monochrome color scheme by default.
-The setup program has less mouse drivers, and asks for the applications disk before the utilities disk.
-This version includes PIFEDIT.EXE, which was strangely absent from certain versions of Win1, including retail 1.01.
-No Write program and therefore a complete lack of a Disk 5.

I checked if the alleged dir/p bug that deleted everything after the first page was there, and nothing happened, so that myth's busted. ;)

Looking back at that old fake build we had, it is surprising how many people were fooled by it. It was just 1.01 with no Write and the bootscreen and about boxes changed to "Premiere Edition". People believed it was real just because it matched a pic on Microsoft's FTP.

Also, I can't seem to get the mouse to work on VMWare Player.

There are quite a few reasons:

1. This is a extremely rare release, and there have been many doubts about it existing. In fact, only close partners and employees of MS in mid-to-late 1985 would have concrete proof of it existing. (Alias was an intern at that time.)

2. We have only been after it since 29 years, 4 months, 2 weeks and 5 days. (Taken from latest file modification date)

3. We have seen so many fakes in the past that some have given up on it existing.

4. It was like mentioning the PE was frowned upon at one point, that's how controversial it was.

Why do all the best releases happen when I'm asleep? :P

Anyway, thanks to all who made this happen for a job done superbly and making sure the images came in a near-pristine condition! :)

UPDATE:

Everything looks legit, but I believe that no one has noticed this:

Image

KERNEL100 is the PE kernel and KERNEL101 is the 1.01 kernel.

The closest you get to the name is this guy:

Offtopic Comment
Did I mention that there are a lot of differences between those two kernels?

To get PS/2 mouse support, replace mouse.exe with the mouse.drv file from a Windows 2.01 disk or runtime, such as the Excel 2.00 disks. Then run setup. At least that worked for me. For some reason PE Setup will hang if you try to use the usual 2.03 version.

To run with DOS 5 or 6, make sure SETVER is loaded and type:
SETVER WIN100.MID 3.31

To run under DOSBox, use the command:
ver set 3 31

Ok I'll try that.

If you want to run it without swapping code from Windows 2.x...why don't you guys just follow Battler's advice and use PCem? For the period correct machines (IBM AT, IBM XT), it has native serial mouse support...

I probably have to configure it first in the bios, but I can't figure out how to get into the setup...

EDIT: When I boot without DOS floppy I get something, but I have no idea what to do with it.

Got my harddisk working with the win486 rom, working like a charm now!

4 years later (in 1989) this guy was a member of NT team that worked on Windows NT API. I guess he had nothing to do with entrepreneur Steve Wood.

Nice job catching that. However, I still wonder why those strings were in the PE kernel in the first place...

He probably wrote part/most of the kernel and wanted to leave a signature. Kinda like the MZ string.

I'm not good with PCem, and would rather use VPC2007 or VMware.

I got it installed in PCem AMI 486 with Compaq MS-DOS 3.31.

And the old method to patch Win1.x EGA hires driver for VGA support as described in my blog http://yksofthome.blogspot.com/2011/08/ ... x-vga.html
still works on this edition's EGAHIRES.exe.
Image

I also ran it on a real modern PC, however as the PS/2 mouse driver from Windows 2.03 hangs this build's installer I couldn't get the mouse to work.

On that he is in the FTP of Betarchive! :D

I really hate this attitude people have here on BA, which basically translates to, "I'm too lazy to learn how to use something different and expect others to do the work for me". It's the same with the kids here who are scared by the command line. You're expected to learn a skill, not have the entire world of computing handed to you on a silver platter.

Theoretically it is possible to run windows from unaggregated kernel gdi user etc. The procedure is documented in the Windows 2.11 OAK, but I couldn't get it to work.
