I would like to ask if people who registered (and had 10 posts) before 28th July must follow the new rules. I think so, and I'm a bit sad for not having requested ftp access earlier.

I don't mind uploading something, the problem is going to be knowing what is inside the ftp. I have a million cds that came with magazines in the 90s, are you interested in them? they are full of demos, shareware, that kind of stuff. I think shareware is not interesting, so no. Although, to be honest, those programs are a piece of old history, and if not archived, they will be completely forgotten. Those cds used to come with maps for games, editors, tools... they are like treasure chests and they are interesting to me, as I spent my childhood with them. Anyway, I'm just asking your opinion about it.

Also, I have some old translation software, the harrier jump jet, nascar racing and x-wing (spanish versions, all original). I also own an original copy of red hat 5.2 (spanish). I know you don't accept open software, but I bought that thing in a blue box in the 90s. Not sure if I should simply upload everything and hope for the best, or if there is a way to see the content of the ftp. If nothing I have is interesting, I'll buy something valuable on ebay, but again, not sure what is already in the ftp.

If I missed the way to see the files inside, I apologize, tried to read everything before posting.

We gave a 1 week gap to give those who already registered a chance but obviously you missed that which I can only say sorry for.

My suggestion is pm mrpijey a list of non shareware items you have and see if any are suitable.

I am a new member who has joined only two days too late to comply with old rules for access to ftp.

My interest for betas versions of Windows is somewhat recent and I didn't know that BetaArchive existed before the previous day of my registration.
If it's easy to find iso files for Windows Whistlers or Longhorns (with WinWorld), BetaArchive is the only place I know where I could download iso files of beta builds of Windows 7 and 8.
My BIG problem is that I am not owner of any original old software, with or without its documentation. I have only old softwares that everybody can find for free on several sites specialised in (like abandonware-france.org).

If I understand well, I will never get the right to download anything, according to the last contribution rules.

And I feel this unfair. As I am not a hacker, neither a flooder nor a spammer. If I only get the right to post from time to time, why should I stay ?

Could you reconsider your rules ? (Please ;) )

How is this unfair? You give us 1-2 GB. BA gives you 11TB. Where is the unfairness?

Viking, so everything you run on your computers are all pirated? Nothing you own exists on any original disc? Not even a new game, OS or anything?

And how is that unfair? You contribute to the whole collection and in return you get access to said collection. More than fair I think.

So no, the rules will not be reconsidered, why should you get special treatment if no one else get one?

SoftWitch here wrote a guide on possible sources you can explore to find something. I suggest you try first. Check bargain stores, ask friends and family, there's always someone with a game, OS disc or app you can borrow.

I own some recent games with their original DVD but they are too recent to be considered as "abandonware", idem for my discs of Windows XP, Vista and 7. And you have already these OS in your collection.
Before I can find something that you don't have in it, Windows 9 may have become outdated...

I am registered on a french forum which offers to download old Windows 1, 2, 3, 95 , NT 3.5 and 4, and beta versions of these OS, even Neptune, and a lot of apps of the same era to the sole condition to be registered on the forum.
I would have wished something like this here.

It doesn't matter if they are too new to be considered abandonware, they are still acceptable since I archive everything and release it once it's time. Remember, BA deals with preservation now, which means we preserve everything of value. What's being offered to our members however follows our abandonware guidelines. But even your new stuff will become abandonware one day, and when that day comes then we'll have a properly archived release. The older a release is the higher risk of severe damage to the packaging or media, or even loss of documentation etc. So if we can scan and dump everything when it's pristine and new then even better once it becomes abandonware, as the stuff may be lost to history or damaged beyond repair.

Imagine if someone had done a fresh scan and dump back when Windows 1.0 was new (ignoring the fact that scanning equipment etc didn't exist)... then we would have had an awesome copy of it today.

Also, even if we happen to have some stuff you own it may still be interesting, because if we don't have any proper MDF dump or scans then we'll replace that lesser release with a better one.

Drop me a PM with what you got and I'll tell you what we would be interested in. Or just dump whatever you got and send it up and I'll make sure I will process it and archive it for current and future release.

One question.

Is there a limit to how big the file is that you put on the ftp?

No. There is not. The only limit is that it has to be original, and not an iso downloaded off of TPB.

The only limitation is the drive size :). But as rhobariii said, no TPB or otherwise downloaded files, but they have to be your own dumps (done the proper way), and media/artwork scans.

GM versions are the final versions of iOS, they are just released to developers before the public release.

@mrpijey : first, I apologize to you for having (maybe) hurt you in my previous posts.

I will make a list of my PC games. I have a question. You mention Alcohol 120%, CloneCD or CloneDVD as softwares for copying original CD or DVD.
I have PowerISO installed on my PC, can I use it to make an ISO file if you are interested by one of my discs ?

No, ISOs of abandonware are not allowed.
Dump them into MDFs.
(ISOs don't dump certain parts of the discs)

Don't worry, I have not taken any offense :). ISOs are not preferred as they don't save all the necessary data. That's why A120, Daemon Tools or CloneCD/DVD are preferred. MDF dumps primarily. ISOs are only acceptable if the original source distributed them as ISOs (i.e Microsoft MSDN, TechNet etc).

To scan the manual of the program or game, is every page required or will just the covers suffice?

Every page is preferrable, the more we can preserve of the artwork and documentation the better, but if you're unable to properly scan the pages then front and back covers will do.

Will I be OK to upload old PC simulations by Microprose to the ftp? I don't want to get into trouble with copyright issues etc.

Yeah, if it's properly imaged. And include scans.

No. TIF, PNG or BMP.

You're color blind :). No kidding, you just had the wrong group settings. It's been fixed now.

Thanks again. I've tried to set my group by myself but I didn't see any change.

Naturally you can't set the group yourself... would be silly if members could promote themselves to members, moderators or even admins... :)
