I can bear it if I have to ... but they do just use page space and badwidth for no reson.
After all, I personally never click on banner ads, or any other type of ad.

Servers and bandwidth cost money, and the money obviously has to come from somwhere.
But from what you've told me, the ads don't even earn you any proper money ...
Can't you think of another way to rase a bit money?

The world would be a better place without bloody ads everywhere ...

Thats my opinion anyway ... :)

Well the donate button is always available and many have donated in the past, however since the majority of the community are teenagers who have no money/job/paypal account, even if they wanted to donate (and some have), they wouldn't be able to. So ads seem the only other way to make even the slightest bit of money towards running the site.

The reason we have ads on BetaArchive is so the site can continue to run for free. The problem is if we get rid of the ads, it becomes necessary to ask the users for donations towards keeping the site running. With the ads in place this isn't necessary.

If we were to remove the ads, the scheme that would be put into place would be a monthly payment, that would not be huge, but enough that a number of paying members would cover the bills, to access the private servers section and have unlimited downloads (within reason). Its either that or the ads, and I can quickly guess which one will be chosen for one main reason.

BA is a teenager 'dominated' forum. The majority of members are teenagers, very few are adults. The problem arises when teenagers come to pay for access. They either won't have any money, or they won't have a way to pay for access (or both).

So it comes down to ads or nothing. Like I say I can quickly guess which option it will be.

I use appropriate entries in my hosts file and that's okay for me.

Thats fine but like I suggested above, its either ads or members pay for private servers access.

Adblock works for me. Its definately preferable to having to pay.

I am mainly worried about the ads driving people away from the site and therefore getting less traffic and less hits, which the results in less members and the site slowly dying...

I know and I can perfectly understand you, but as I said in the other topic, some of the ads (those from adbrite) caused an error when I tried to load the BA site or access forums/topics and prevented the site from loading, actually making BA unusable for me. That's the primary reason I killed them.

Yeah, thats the main problem with ads. If only they let us host them on our own servers it wouldn't cause an issue.

I'm that use to seeing ads wherever I go these days that I hardly notice
them here, so they don't bother me one bit..
It's not like they're pop-up ads in your face...

I would never make pop-up in your face ads. They aggravate me -so- much!

In fact you know what, stuff the ads. I can't have it on my mind that BA might be losing visitors this very second!!

They're ALL removed now. Looks like my pocket is going to have to get a little deeper eh?

Well, I think my idea was best, like I said to you on MSN Andy ... :P

Limit free downloads either by number of files or by file size, and then charge a monthly membership for unlimited and faster downloads. That way people can get what they want for free, but paying the membership makes life better/easier. That way the tight-arse people (or those who can't pay for a good reason) arn't left out, but others can support the site and get a better service for it ....

Aren't you some 16 year old admin? Go work at MacDonalds, get some cash, and pay for a server. It's not that expensive.

Yeah but aren't you still living with mommy and daddy? That's the key, I'm not, I have billz to pay, and I know finding a job is hard, because I'm trying to find a job just based on a few MCP's, that will pay somewhat decent. If you look at it this way, If I was working and living on $20k a year, and you worked a $8/hr job at MacDonalds, we'd both have about the same amount of money for free will spending.

I still live with my Dad yes but thats got nothing to do with it. Some people live with their parents all their life and do well for themselves.

Anyway, back on topic please.

I'd have lots of money if I never spent any, that goes without saying!

But what's the point in having money if you're not gonna spend it? :P

PS: I allready have a nice car from this century, and a few PC's. But anyway, I don't give a flying [censored] if there was an ad or 2. Just don't like, fill it up every other topic, or put 20 ads for www.cum-fuck-me-now.com and 5 popups for the same site. Extra revenue is allways good (even though porno sites pay good, amex pays good too, but you got too many kiddies here who wouldn't complete an application)

Now I feel guilty for using Camino's "block web ads" option. Unfortunately, I can't set exceptions. If you put the ads back on, I guess I'll have to surf the internet "old-skool" style. 8)
