neptune and 2k
What are the differences between neptune and 2k? Is it mostly graphics? Is it possible to change 2k into neptune?

Indeed. Only stupid people use Windows 2000 Professional as a server.empireum wrote:Windows 2000 Professional doesn't install any server stuff as it's a workstation OS.WildEye001 wrote:Well, Windows 2000 makes you install the server stuff, because it was made for that

Prehaps firstly discover the main differences between them, and any core DLL's that are different.
And I could try and design a Windows 2000 Home Edition or Windows 2000 Personal bootscreen...

You can still use it for server purposes but it has certain limits implemented, such as the maximum number of concurrent connections. Keep in mind that Win2k Server is still quite expensive – and don't get me started on piracy.Compact-mac wrote:Indeed. This discussion of "server stuff" isn't especially helpful in getting to the differences between 2000 and Neptune - there isn't really any "server stuff" in 2000 Pro that isn't in Neptune. As far as I can see, Neptune is very similar to 2000 Pro, it's such an early beta that all they've done is add a few ideas like the Welcome Screen and the unfinished Activity Centres on to 2000 Pro, and they haven't taken out any features (server-related or otherwise) of Pro like IIS, Group Policy or the ability to join a domain that they would have done if it had been released as 2000 Home.

That's "Personal Edition", perhaps what the final Neptune would have looked like. Yes, it's based on the Powered bootscreen, from the gallery, because it looks slightly different

I am not good with graphics. When I converted it to a 16 color BMP it messed it up. Can you send one in 16 color BMP?Compact-mac wrote:NP, here ya go:dirtwarrior wrote:Thank youCompact-mac wrote:Prehaps firstly discover the main differences between them, and any core DLL's that are different.

Let's not forget that the majority of the activity centers in Neptune are a big part of the UI of Windows XP - Take a look at the 'new' start menu in XP - then take a look at one of the activity centers in Neptune - the second column, containing the "My Documents, Control Panel", etc. is ripped from Neptune's activity center, and placed in an easier-to-access location. Microsoft's UI designers took what Neptune had started with, and made it more accessible.
Even now, Vista is closer to the UI that Neptune was headed for - complex HTML/JavaScript pages (now mostly xml-based) embedded within Explorer and various other UI components (sidebar).
So, was Neptune merged with Odyssey to create XP? Yes, the UI was certainly merged into another project, which came to eventually be known as Whistler.
