IBM TopView 1.00
Released in 1/10/1985 by IBM
For DOS
Image quality: Unmodified
Announced at the August 1984 release of the IBM AT, TopView is a
text-mode windowed multitasker for the IBM PC, XT, and AT computer.
It was never terribly popular, and was later overtaken by DesqView,
OS/2, and Windows.
It was intended to fill the IBM AT's lack of a desktop multitasking
system. Larger high-end OSes like Xenix were not suitable for common
PC desktop tasks, and Microsoft was dragging its feet developing
"Windows".
TopView features overlapping windows and optional CGA graphics mode.
(run "TV /G"). It introduced the use of Program Information Files
(PIF files). Supports a Microsoft or Mouse Systems mouse.
Version 1.1, introduced in June 1986, added support for the IBM PC
Network and IBM 3270 terminal emulation. Importantly, support for
swapping non-resident programs was added onto the hard disk on all
computers and into the high memory area on machines equipped with a
286 CPU. The initially poor support for DOS batch files was improved.
Version 1.12, introduced in April 1987, added support for the new IBM
PS/2 series, their DOS 3.30 operating system, and their new PS/2
mice. It could also now use up to four serial ports.
Archive includes two 360k 5.25" floppy disk images.
