Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Problems

Post by ATeamInc »

Can someone please help me? When running any version of Windows NT 4.0 in virtualbox, particularly Workstation, networking isn't fully supported. For example, shared folders don't work and network sometimes times out. Why is this happening?

VirtualBox isn't exactly great with NT 4.0. Try VMWare, which works fine for me, or VirtualPC.

See this: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes

It is expressly said that Windows NT 4.0 doesn't support Shared Folders.

As for networking, I've never run into any kind of issue with Windows NT. Make sure you set it to connect either via NAT or Bridged adapter (go for the PCnet-FAST III because later chips won't do the trick...) and then you should manage to access the Internet. ;)

I am running Windows 8.1 so I can't use VPC. Also, my processor is not supported by VMware. So, Virtualbox is my only option.

VirtualBox is not the only option for you. You can use Hyper-V

You can use VPC on 8.1 https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30393 . What do you mean by "processor is not supported by VMware?"

Windows NT 4 works on VirtualBox for me too.

I don't know, but I would guess that Hyper-V is a bit too modern to run NT 4. I looked at the supported guest OS list for Hyper-V on Server 2016 and it only went back to Windows 7. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't emulate any old hardware in Hyper-V.
