I have got an IBM Netvista with 1.5GByte of RAM but get this problem after installing Windows 95 OSR 2.5. It installs fine but when restarting I get this message: Quit one or more memory-resident programs or unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and restart your computer. The thing is I keep getting this message even when renaming the extension of both autoexec.bat and config.sys files to txt rather than bat and sys. How can I make windows 95 to work and boot. I get the same problem when installing windows 98SE.
This computer has got an Intel Pentium 4 at 1.80 GHz
20 GByte hard disk
1536 Mbytes of RAM

Like I said, the installation itself was okay but when rebooting I came across this problem.

I am getting the same problem when installing Windows 98SE.

Windows 9x was made for 512MB tops. To be safe, drop the RAM down to 256MB.

Use Windows 2000 or XP. Win9x is not optimized for 1gb and above.

The maximum for Windows 95 is 512 MB, though Windows 98 can go up to 1154 MB and Windows Me can go up to 1995 MB. Above 512 MB, adjustments to vcache settings in system.ini are recommended.

Try setting maxfilecache to 524288. If that doesn't work, try adding MaxPhysPage=20000 under [386Enh] to limit the amount of RAM visible to the OS to 512 MB whilst having the full 1.5 GB available to other OSes.

You can also look into Rudolph Loew's patch (which costs 20 USD plus a 2 USD handling charge if I remember correctly) if you want Windows 9x to see the full amount of RAM without issue. But I don't think a typical Windows 95 workload would need more than 512 MB.

Actually, Windows 95 (at least OSR 2.x) can go up to around 900MB ( MaxPhysPage=3B000 ), but the exact maximum number can vary a bit from machine to machine. One catch with more RAM, however, is the disk cache will perodically do something that causes 95 to temprarily freeze and the amount of time taken turns from seconds in to minutes as you increase the RAM. To fix that, add MaxFileCache=65536 to the [vcache] section in the system.ini.

My Patch fixes all of these problems and supports up to 4GB of RAM in Windows 95, 98, 98SE, and ME.

That hardware is WAY too new for Win9x. Install Windows XP or Vista, otherwise find an older system.

Vista would be very painful with the 20 GB HDD and the P4 at 1.80 GHz (probably Williamette; those aren't even comfortable on XP SP2+ at times). Windows Me would allow for the full usage of the RAM without a patch or maxphyspage and only use ~500 MB of space as opposed to 7-10 GB for Vista.

If you can find WDM drivers for everything it should be stable (for 9x)
