How to make IE6 & OE6 work on WinXP SP2 x86 & x64 (2018)

Post by Beta12 »

I found this topic but is locked: Why does IE6 not work for any website?
Of course, IE6 is old and many websites will not work properly. Today, almost everyone uses SSL (https://) and high encryption 256-bit. IE6 in WinXP SP2 default cipher strength is 128-bit and https://google.com not work:

For IE6 to work:
  • enable TLS 1.0 in settings

  • manually extract with (/x cmd switch) and update WindowsXP-KB3055973-v3-x86-Embedded-ENU.exe (rsaenh.dll & schannel.dll) & WindowsXP-KB968730-x86-ENU.exe (crypt32.dll) - replace files in C:\WINDOWS\system32 booting in Safe Mode or from Linux live
Now IE6 have 256-bit cipher strength and websites work with SSL:

Outlook Express 6 also working :-)

…why if you can just, as I said here

And it has nothing to do with security settings, because HTTP protocol can't be encrypted at all.
And modern websites won't work not only because of certificates, but… well, Internet has changed since 2001, HTML5 didn't exist back then.

OK, after add registry key User Agent and String value Version=MSIE 5.99 IE6 work only with no SSL but OE6 still not work if set SSL for SMTP & POP3:

Try my way. If you update crypt32.dll, rsaenh.dll, schannel.dll then IE6 an OE6 work with SSL. I remind you that it is a WinXP SP2:

But what you're doing is basically take SP3 (or rather POSReady 2009) update and replace a bunch of files. Why don't you just use the fully updated SP3 with POSReady updates? I would (barely) understand if SP3 was slower than SP2… but it isn't! And why would you use such unsecure program as Outlook Express with a 14-year-old system? The only reason you'd install XP SP2 today is as a virus tester on virtual machine and you certainly can live without OE on that.

What does this have to do with the topic?

The topic is about what to do to make IE6 and OE6 work, and not whether it is secure or not.

P.S. For several years I have been using OE6 (my favorite email client) in WinXP SP2 but 64-bit version and I've never had a virus yet. IE6 - I do not use this because most websites do not work correctly.

I have a very temperamental old app that only works on IE ... I'll have to try this, I was messing with stunnel to build a secure endpoint, but this is all the better!

I guess there is something similar for XP x64 /2003 x64 server?

Anyone try 2000?

Yes.
WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB948963-x64-ENU.exe (rsaenh.dll, schannel.dll)
WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB938397-x64-ENU.exe (crypt32.dll)

I'm sorry to bump this topic, but is there anything specific or these XP updates would be used to get it working on 2000?
