Re: Why Windows Vista/7 doesn't work on a Pentium

You're getting it all wrong. NT 6 can indeed run on a Pentium 4 system (I actually used to run 7 on a P-IV Prescott), but it can't run on an original Pentium, maybe because it lacks PAE (introduced in the Pentium Pro). I've also successfully ran Windows 7 on a AMD Duron, which only has MMX, 3DNow!+,...

Re: Good antivirus (preferably free) for Windows Server 2003

If a virus trashes my VM, I have to re-install, and reactivate, which would be an activation wasted. You could use snapshots. I mean, you could simply take one snapshot of a "good" state of your VMs. And if a virus hits any VM, you can access the VM's virtual disk from your host (or from another VM...

Re: Steam DepotDumper (beta)

The purpose is to archive them, not to allow piracy so you can play them without paying for them. So I am afraid you will have to look for your answers elsewhere, as our concern for these titles ends with preserving them for the day Steam decides to pull them off the store. Ok, if I actually owned ...

Yes, but besides having compatibility issues on some websites (everyone develops for chrome now) it can't render polymer either and will stop working with Youtube in March also. https://i.imgur.com/UpNvN67.png Hmmm... How do I port Windows 7(+) functions/dependencies/...?

So for example, QEMU requires kernel32.dll's TryAcquireSRWLockExclusive function, and I want to implement it in let's say ReactOS. I know there's a damn lot involved in porting even one or two functions or dependencies from one to another Windows, so this is why I put ReactOS as an example, because ...

Suggestion/Opinion regarding SFV files

In a recent poll, BA Admins asked whether to keep Windows 10 betas since they were holding too much space. The final decision was to reduce the space by taking a base build (en-us), compare it to its localized counterparts (en-gb) and save the differences with SmartFileVersion files (SFV), so that w...

Didn't a VPC Rollup add these "widescreen" resolutions? https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=369687#p369687 Note that MS has shutdown the download links, but you can still access the files through the WebArchive WayBack Machine Edit: Just realized it's Windows Virtual PC and not Microso...

Re: Which FTP client works best for Windows Vista?

FileZilla works well. You need a version that is compatible since they dropped support in 3.0.15 i think. I usually use 3.0.8 in XP & Vista, so I recommend you that version.

Re: What's your preferred method of installing software?

Physical media. Disc images spend space in the hard drive, and are prone to corruption (one day I erased 50GB+ in disc images due to a mis-selection in Ubuntu installer, it was a sad day). In my experience, physical media is better because you don't waste disc space, you can save them easily in a sh...

Re: What do you guys think of Windows 7’s EOL?

I'm actually wondering how this is gonna affect application support. Many apps still support Windows 7 to this date, and while they could drop support for 7 in the EOL date, just like many apps did with XP, apps might still support it some 1, 2, or even 3 years more (like Chrome (1y) and Firefox(3y)...

Re: Any hack to run VPC on Win10?

I believe you are correct. I might have heard rumours say that Virtual PC can work on Windows Vista. However, they also said that it wasn't very certain, but it is. Virtual PC 2007 WAS designed to run on Windows Vista. The fact that it runs on Windows 7 is a result of 7's compatibility with Vista a...

Into QEMU, right? And it blue screens with PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA, ain't it? I remember that you could add a physical disk to VirtualBox by creating a VMDK and attaching the physical disk to this file, then using it in the virtual machine. Just search "attach physical disk virtual box" and you...

You only need VHD support, which was introduced in Windows 7 and is present in all versions of Windows since 7

Re: Any hack to run VPC on Win10?

Why wouldn't you use VMware or VirtualBox for guest computers? It's faster than VPC! It's pretty good for running guest computers. There are many reasons to use VPC instead of VirtualBox or VMware. One of them is the performance & integration you get in 9x OSes. I'm aware that these hypervisors are...

I'm aware that the VPC Guest Additions might conflict with Windows 3.1, specifically the Folder Sharing driver. Maybe you should try to comment it out and see what happens.
