Re: Introducing the Microsoft KB Archive

From what I've heard that format was only used from 1998 to around 2002, and at other times they've used .mvb, .ivt and .hxs. It doesn't look like 7-Zip claims to support any of those formats so it might be worth noting that the instructions aren't applicable to all MSDN discs. Note that we have de...

Re: How does Windows XP upgrade phase 2 work?

The statement is still true, if you look at the upgrade log after upgrading to Windows XP: Quelle 0: D:\I386\usetup.exe nach C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\system32\smss.exe kopieren [OK] The path %SystemRoot%\system32\smss.exe is hardcoded in the Windows NT kernel so they needed to do this bit of "trickery" to ge...

Re: How does Windows XP upgrade phase 2 work?

How did the normally text-based portion of setup become so graphical, especially the bootscreen? And why didn't Microsoft do that for a clean install of XP booted off of the CD? Well as you said, this fake graphical setup is non-interactive. A clean setup usually requires user input (install or rep...

Start -> Shutdown, hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift, click Cancel. This quits Explorer permanently.

Unless I'm missing something that's the most powerful PowerPC-based rig that you can get that runs NT4. Have fun with the (lack of) applications.

Someone told me that the Windows 10 x86 bootloader still has the code to check for 386 and 486 stepping, carried over all the way from NT 3.1. I think that's hilarious.

Re: Windows NT 3.5 Source Code Leak

Is it possible to make HPFS (pinball.sys) compatible with Windows NT 6.x or 64GB or more? Not without breaking compatibility to OS/2 and other HPFS implementations (i. e. the third-party DOS and Linux drivers), and there's really no point in doing that. There is actually some clever person that mad...

The NT 3.5 leak also has the complete source code of Microsoft Mail, including a XENIX gateway for communicating with Microsoft's internal XENIX mail server that I'm pretty sure never shipped outside MS. Oh and you can read funny Word documents on Microsoft's progress to get NTVDM working. Apparentl...

ZIP folders relies on the call GetDiskFreeSpaceEx, which is only available on Windows 95 OSR2 and above, so it will not work on the original Windows 95. It also requires IE4 installed.

Re: Plus! 98 on Windows 95

Most Plus!98 components are incompatible with Windows 95, so even if you could bypass the version check (it does a standard Windows API call to version.dll), the components wouldn't work on 95. Only a handful of Plus!98 components are compatible with Windows 95, such as Spider Solitaire and the desk...

[Tutorial] Software Poweroff in Windows NT 3.51

For some reason I don't see this mentioned anywhere so I will post about it. Normally Windows NT 3.51, like most Windows NT operating systems, don't support software poweroff and will just leave you hanging on a "It is now safe to turn off the computer" screen forever. The Windows NT 4.0 solution ha...

Re: MS Office spellchecker files

You can change the language of the spellchecker in 16-bit Office by fiddling with win.ini and winword6.ini/excel5.ini/powerpnt.ini/etc. Supposedly 16-bit office did have multiple languages support but I haven't seen that in action yet. You'll need to know the Microsoft language codes for this (i. e....

Not quite, Alpha support was dropped shortly after the release of Service Pack 6a. Which also means Alpha users never got Terminal Server Service Pack 6, which was released quite a bit later.

That feature was only added with later versions of Windows NT. You can still create a do-it-yourself version of a boot floppy by following my tutorial although that obviously won't be authentic.

None at all, because you were supposed to use MUI packages to translate the English Windows XP x64 to the target language. There are no localized versions of Windows XP x64 whatsoever.

Under VirtualBox you can just use the boxvideo.sys video driver and it works perfectly fine if you copy framebuf.dll from the Windows NT 3.51 CD beforehand (it doesn't get installed automatically).

Re: The Longhorn Kernel-Mode Timebomb

NT4 has a similar bugcheck that is tied to the kernel synchronizing its internal clock (with the CMOS clock, even though the generally more accurate system clock is also available). The system won't immediately fail upon expiry, but will set a flag that will fall through to the bug check the next ti...

The NTFS conversion succeeds on NT 3.1 chk. It really does seem to be a timing issue. NT 3.1 wouldn't be the only operating system with such a bug (Windows 2000 RTM has a similar bug where it writes garbage to the hard drive if the hard drive is too fast).

Not really what you were looking for, but if you set up a dual-boot configuration of NT 3.1 and NT 3.5 (installing the file system update from the NT 3.5 CD on NT 3.1), you can use NT 3.5's conversion utility to convert the boot partition to NTFS, then boot to NT 3.1 and ditch NT 3.5. I only read about it randomly in a comments section, but apparently, it is possible to install Visual C++ 2.0 in Windows NT 3.1. Since all calls a driver can do (including file access etc.) have to go through the Windows kernel, it is possible to use the easily available Windows debug symbols to at least figure out what the driver is trying to do.
