Hi

I'm trying to install Windows Whistler build 2296 on VMWare 12 and it just won't install, the setup stage just says "Setup is starting Windows Whistler" and then just sits there and does nothing, does anyone know how to fix this?

VMWare is not compatible with anything below build 2410,so use something like PCem (86box) or Virtual PC 2004/2007.

Actually, VMware is indeed compatible with builds below 2410.1. I installed them successfully over the years on it.

VMWare is compatible with all Whistler builds, if it doesn't work, try setting the OS to Windows 2000 when creating the VM or set the hardware compatibility to some older version of VMWare, like 7

I've set the compatibility to Version 6.5-7x, and the OS version to 2000, but to no avail. Still just sits there and refuses to play ball, any other suggestions or should I just try another program?

VMware 12 is incompatible with Whistler builds. But if you set compatibility with VMware 5.0, 6.0 or 6.5-7.0, this will work, but you can't install Whistler builds from 2276 to 2416.

If it still doesn't work, use VirtualBox. Go to The Collection Book to find out how to change the VM date in VirtualBox. If you're using Windows 7 or lower, try VirtualPC

I have got a working installation of 2296 on virtualbox but the graphics drivers aren't compatible so I'm stuck in 16 colours (ugh...) and my VMWare compatibility is set to 6.5-7 for the machine.

Install VirtualBox Guest Additions. If they don't work, download older Guest Additions

I have it fixed now - I manually extracted the drivers from the .exe file and installed them through the device manager in 2296
