Is build 8056 was the first build that with start screen?

Post by DiaoSlime »

ImageJust like the title, recently i visit the BA wiki,i clock to build 7996,and says“....8102 is the first build with start screen.”But MetroFetro released the 8056 start menu unlocker. So I think was 8056 is the first build with metro start screen,or the unlocker just copy the files from 8102?

That hack uses 8102's shsxs.dll with some bits and bobs changed. I wonder if that DLL would work on 7989, but in the past it was tryed to unlock start screen in 7989 but failed.

But as we all know the first confirmed build to have the start screen is 7985 of a build lab that I forget. Also, as far as I know, 7996 is just speculation.

Because 7985 is a certain fbl build that may contain much more features than its winmain counterpart. 7989 is winmain and was compiled before the 7985 I was talking about.

8056 may be the first leaked build containing a fully working start screen, however since the branch is designed for OEM testing, I think no final conclusion would be made. Still waiting.

No we haven't. It was shown in D9 2011 so it's a demo build; we rarely get those. We only have 7989 and a neighboring build of the same lab (7973 i think) which does NOT have the start screen. Builds before 8056 do contain traces of start screen material (in twinui.dll, etc.) but they are useless.

False. 8056= fbl_grfx_dev1, the OEM branch is fbl_eeap. According to Lukas, fbl_eeap is so restricted it doesn't even support redpill, that means you can't enable start screen in it, even with the right shsxs.

The "unlocker" is just some modified 8102(WDP) shsxs.dll, explaining why some stuff doesn't work, e.g Immersive IE.

The wiki is right, 8102 was the first winmain build to have the start screen(and thus shsxs.dll). There are some rumours about start screen being implemented at earliest in 796x_fbl_uex_mtl, but those are again not confirmed.

Both are quite different:

* One is from the lab fbl_core2_sid_data. It is still visually similar to the earlier 7963 but it is a checked (debug) build. It is also only leaked for AMD64.
* The other is from the lab fbl_core1_kernel_npc. It's visually slightly more similar to 7989. Also, it is a regular non-debug build which is only leaked in x86.

Neither of them have the start screen, if you have that doubt.

I don't know what is the first Windows 8 build with start screen, but in original 8056 and 8102 there are NO start screens. Even if it exists, you will need special patches to get it; also, today I saw on FTP two Windows 8 DP distros, one contains Developer tools, the other contains Start Screen. You can check it out.

Checked builds require you to have a kernel debugger attached and they output some debug info there
Also known as Cvolton elsewhere...

I meant that it's not enabled by default and original ISO doesn't include it.

It depends on your understanding of 'original'. When 8102 was built it is an internal build, no integrated redpill and .101 kernel hotfix, however MS released a remaking version with those things after BUILD conference. It's offical and original too, just being a public preview. And 8056 and 8102's start screen show quite different. So I'd agree more that new original start screen are available in 8102.

Sorry, I was unattentive. Windows 8 build 8102 has Start Screen, but 8056 doesn't.

Shsxs.dll was used as a key apart from the iso? Like did the microsoft developers get the dll as an activation of the Start menu and the other stuff?

Is there a key in shsxs.dll?

Post by hounsell »

No.

Some of the resources and code for the start screen was contained within shsxs.dll. Without this DLL it was not possible to run the start screen in those earlier builds.

This DLL was only available to (very) select groups within Microsoft.

Someone told me about "beta check" before. He said that "check" betas accept drivers without digital sign, while drivers to install in the normal betas must be digitally signed.
