Chicago 58s Problems.

Post by WindowsCollector2000 »

Hey guys!

I was just trying to install Windows 95 (Chicago) build 58s, but I get the KERNEL386.EXE Problem. I use WNTDPSL to fix the problem, but it only makes it worse. It deletes every file in the Chicago Directory.

This is being installed via VBox.
If there is a way to do this in VBox or vmware, please tell me!

I know your not going to want this answer, but I do NOT recommend using VBox, or VMWare for very old OSes, including Chicago 58s. I would use Virtual PC 2007 if possible. If you have to use either, I would heavily recommend VMWare.

Yeah... I think VirtualBox even has problems with the RTM version of Windows 95. Please use either VPC 2007 or PCem.

Wrote about this issue not so long ago: http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewto ... 39&t=34041

As for WDPSL, can't remember the sate of it to be honest at the moment, since I kind of left off the project as is without touching it for a long time. If I remember correctly I was rewriting it last time I updated it, and that could be why it doesn't work anymore with some things.

But Chicago works on VBox, even better than on VPC IIRC. Maybe create 3.1 machine instead of 95?
I haven't got any problems when installing.

It's Windows 3.1, the RAM is set to 24MB. And to gus33000, the win /d:x trick didn't work. :(

Just found a fix, Install the OS, use the KERNEL386.EXE patch (don't start the OS), and it boots!

Or use PCem/PCem-X, it even has native support for what Chicago 4.00.58s supports as video cards, like the ET4000AX or the TVGA8900D (yes, the TVGA8900D is supported on Chicago 4.00.58s, provided you select the "Super VGA" drivers in the installation routine and not the SVGA 800x600 16 color ones).

TheCollector1988 - I may have said this in the past, PCEM-X doesn't work for me. But I will try PCEM, if WNTDPSL works on it, or I'll need a fix for the KERNEL386.EXE bug.
EDIT: PCEM does have support for CD-ROMs, but not downloaded CD-ROMs. So how is Chicago 58s going to work on it?

Use a disc mounting tool such as Daemon Tools.
